I have a rear that goes to 34, and am planning on a carbon bike as a reward for hitting 180, hopefully before the end of the year. The one I've chosen https://www.masibikes.com/bikes/carbo...ione-apex-2012 comes with SRAM Apex w/11-32 cassette. By the time I get to 180 though, a 105 w/11-28 may not seem that bad.

Nice treat! Are masi bikes still.... masi?
I think if you plan on doing the ski lifts that 32 will come in handy, otherwise 28 and a compact front is plenty. Heck, i think beanz does it in his big ring.
I don't think I've ever gone all the way to the shack without at least a brief pause somewhere... maybe 2. There are some nice scenic overlooks, it'd be a shame to skip them.

Big ring only on good days.
It's pretty beneficial to stop after 2 miles or so. The shock hits you about that point so it's a big mental relief to get off the bike for a minute or two to collect your marbles if you haven't done the climb before.

Based on your description......we've all lost our marbles to even consider this!
Should be a great ride. I'm already carbo-loading! I actually started that back in 2008, though.

........... Good one PJ!
Yeah, shock. Before having a good chance to warm the body up, the mind has some serious doubts at this point. Get off, rest relax then trick the mind into thinking the rest is going to be easy..........you'll see what I mean

I'm just excited to finally meet the Mayor of Sart... the Grand Poobah of GMR... the Climbingest Clyde...
Dude, I hit all three major trails on Sunday and didn't see you on a single one. i'm starting to doubt that you exist.

All those titles are just jokes. I got the mayor from Girrlyrida who said that I wave to everyone, stop to shake hands with the men, hug the women and kiss babies ha ha!
You need to slow down a bit so you can get a good look at the other riders around you if you plan to spot me.

Here are some tips:
First attempt for GMR will be your hardest. Each time after that will be easier. Even if you don't make it the first time, the next time you will do better. Sometimes it takes several attempts to make it to the shack.
Measure yourself against yourself, not others. Don't worry about who's faster. Your goal is to do better than yourself. I have seen others start really fast, then have a massive fade mid-ride.
Pacing is important. Start slow, remember, you need the energy for the entire ride. Don't burn yourself up trying to chase others. Don't hammer at the beginning, you will run out of gas. Take your time, it's not a race.
At the outset, the first 2 miles of GMR can play havoc on your psyche. The grade can feel relentless. Mentally, I break it up into parts. Like, just make it to the next turn and worry about the rest later. This is especially helpful when you hit the saddles around Newman's point. You finish one saddle, then there is another, then another. This can destroy you mentally. Remember to break it up one turn at a time.
If you start at Boulder Springs, the first shock will be just getting to the dirt lot. The second shock comes after the trailhead to Lower Monroe.
In mountain biking we call them girlfriends. It's the flatter part after each switchback turn on the climb. Ease up and slow down your cadence on the flat parts, take a 2 sec rest, then put more effort in the steeper part, repeat each time. If you maintain speed on the flat parts, you will use up energy best spent on the steeper part. When climbing, even a 2 sec pause will do wonders for your endurance.
I wish all you the best this Sunday.

It was my understanding that we are parking on Boulder Springs Dr., between Dalton Springs Ln. and Fountain Springs Ln.

Yah, you can be there at 8. The rest of us click in at 7. You'll catch us by the 2 mile mark rest/resuscitation stop.

Shoot, it wouldn't take you longer than 4-5 hours! Get up at 2 and do it.
Just think, when you're done, you'll be in the nice part of LA, not in that oven you call home.
Here, I even mapped a route for you. 59 mostly flat miles. Except for Sunland/La Crescenta but let's not focus on that.
