More wipeout footage: Freeride MTB fail

So I've been progressing my way through the jump lines at Duthie Hill MTB Park up here in Issaquah, WA and while I've had a couple of little flubs here and there, I haven't done anything monumentally stupid until yesterday.
OK, maybe it wasn't "stupid" so much as "poorly executed". There's a great freeride line called Ryan's Eternal Flow, which follows a downhill gulley in a zig-zag trail using the gulley like a giant halfpipe. The downhill sides of the run have optional dropoff ramps, and the uphill sides have optional step-up jumps. There's the main trail (all like that) and then there are side branches of optional higher difficulty level where you can not avoid the drop or jump features, and they are typically larger or of greater difficulty than the main trail. I've been flying through the main segment, so I thought I'd brave up and give the optional big step-up a try.
I was less than successful. Thanks to a full-face helmet, armoured gloves, and shin/knee guards I escaped this with little more than a scraped elbow and I'm a little bit sore this morning.

The cameras are ContourHD 1080p, one helmet mounted (main view) and one on the lower right fork slider (PiP).

It's the Comp EVO. Laid back HT angle and longer front end travel. It's a great all-arounder for someone like me who enjoys technical trails but also wants to race enduro. BTW, I'm racing the Tiger Mountain Enduro on Sept. 22nd. There will be footage.

Chicks dig scars until the chick is your wife. Wives seem to dig responsibility more than scars, and who am I to argue when my wife tells me to buy more bike stuff?
Wait, wha? You... you want me to buy more bike stuff? I love you.

I've bitten it worse than that on much simpler stuff, which is why I'm roadying it these days. That looks like a blast though, except for the last bit.

I'll be posting video of the entire run later today. The main trail line, with no wipeouts.

Only if you haven't successfully landed a similar jump.

I had some pretty epic crashes back in my MTB days (about 10-12 years ago). One in particular was on a section of trail that was like a bobsled track with the big banking corners, probably doing about 30mph or so hitting some of the banks. Well, my front tire lost traction going into the last bobsled bank at the bottom of the run and instead of going around the corner I shot right over the bank like a rocket into the trees behind it. It was so freakish looking the guys behind me sent for help before they even found me. There was a drop of about 8 feet from the top of the bank to the bottom on the back side and I probably flew another 4-5 feet above that. I hit a tree in mid air and separated my shoulder and landed in some brush below the tree. Bike was OK, besides the handle bars needed to be tightened up and few new scratches. All in all I was pretty lucky, if I hadn't hit the tree I probably would have landed on the stump behind it after falling another 5 feet.

The thing with MTB is that if you do it long enough you'll have a couple of epic crashes.

Yikes! There's some little step-up-to-bank-turn jumps on this trail, and I flubbed my first attempt at one. Completely missed turning the bike mid-air to meet the bank and just sailed right over the top of the low-side entry point into the bushes. Landed it clean; just... in a shrub. At least it was a soft landing spot. hahaha

The fact that i knew what was going to happen before you even left the lip should be enough indication.

The word "wipeout" is in the title of the video. I think everyone knew what was going to happen.

To be fair when i first started watching it, i thought you were going to lose it going down the drop.

Then on the way up the ramp, seeing your position, i just started to laugh.

Since I'll be giving this another go this weekend, I have to know: My position in what regard? Too far left or right as to where you would have launched? I know that I took it with too much speed because I way overshot the landing, but I'm not sure about what you mean for position.

Here's a good run down the main line of that trail, no wipeouts. Not quite as entertaining for everyone, but you can see why I really like this particular run.

On the MTBR forums, some people said that they didn't like the chest mount perspective, so I made a second video from the helmet cam footage:
I'm always looking for new camera perspectives. Some of the footage I used in my Tour de Cure video were done with the cam mounted to a frame-pump length of PVC, used as a handle to sweep the camera down low while riding. I haven't tried it out yet, but I have an aerial view chaser built up to mount on a rear rack and look down at me from above/behind. Should make for some neat road footage.
The issue with many mount points is vibration (especially off-road.) Thankfully I can edit much of the shake out of it with PowerDirector. I was amazed to see such clean footage from the fork-cam.

From what it looked like, was that your body position was too far forward when you started up the ramp, and like you didnt compress before going off the lip, so you didnt get any extra pop off the rebound, to help carry the bike a bit further to give you time to adjust your landing. So you landed a bit front heavy, and didnt carry over the back side of the lip, so it pushed the rear right out.

It looked more like you were jumping off of a small roller, then off of something with a lip. I dont know how much experience you have jumping off of ramped jumps like that. But when i used to ride dirt bikes in my youth, i did that a thousand times before i got it right.
