More wipeout footage: Freeride MTB fail
So I've been progressing my way through the jump lines at Duthie Hill MTB Park up here in Issaquah, WA and while I've had a couple of little flubs here and there, I haven't done anything monumentally stupid until yesterday.
OK, maybe it wasn't "stupid" so much as "poorly executed". There's a great freeride line called Ryan's Eternal Flow, which follows a downhill gulley in a zig-zag trail using the gulley like a giant halfpipe. The downhill sides of the run have optional dropoff ramps, and the uphill sides have optional step-up jumps. There's the main trail (all like that) and then there are side branches of optional higher difficulty level where you can not avoid the drop or jump features, and they are typically larger or of greater difficulty than the main trail. I've been flying through the main segment, so I thought I'd brave up and give the optional big step-up a try.
I was less than successful. Thanks to a full-face helmet, armoured gloves, and shin/knee guards I escaped this with little more than a scraped elbow and I'm a little bit sore this morning.
The cameras are ContourHD 1080p, one helmet mounted (main view) and one on the lower right fork slider (PiP).

I've bitten it worse than that on much simpler stuff, which is why I'm roadying it these days. That looks like a blast though, except for the last bit.

I had some pretty epic crashes back in my MTB days (about 10-12 years ago). One in particular was on a section of trail that was like a bobsled track with the big banking corners, probably doing about 30mph or so hitting some of the banks. Well, my front tire lost traction going into the last bobsled bank at the bottom of the run and instead of going around the corner I shot right over the bank like a rocket into the trees behind it. It was so freakish looking the guys behind me sent for help before they even found me. There was a drop of about 8 feet from the top of the bank to the bottom on the back side and I probably flew another 4-5 feet above that. I hit a tree in mid air and separated my shoulder and landed in some brush below the tree. Bike was OK, besides the handle bars needed to be tightened up and few new scratches. All in all I was pretty lucky, if I hadn't hit the tree I probably would have landed on the stump behind it after falling another 5 feet.
The thing with MTB is that if you do it long enough you'll have a couple of epic crashes.

The word "wipeout" is in the title of the video. I think everyone knew what was going to happen.

Here's a good run down the main line of that trail, no wipeouts. Not quite as entertaining for everyone, but you can see why I really like this particular run.

I really like that dual camera setup. The helmet cam makes it look more "flowy", while the lower position of the fork-mounted camera gives a greater impression of speed. I have noticed the same thing when I look at the footage from my GoPro mounted on the chest strap vs. my ContourHD on my helmet.
On the MTBR forums, some people said that they didn't like the chest mount perspective, so I made a second video from the helmet cam footage:

The issue with many mount points is vibration (especially off-road.) Thankfully I can edit much of the shake out of it with PowerDirector. I was amazed to see such clean footage from the fork-cam.

Since I'll be giving this another go this weekend, I have to know: My position in what regard? Too far left or right as to where you would have launched? I know that I took it with too much speed because I way overshot the landing, but I'm not sure about what you mean for position.
Here's a good run down the main line of that trail, no wipeouts. Not quite as entertaining for everyone, but you can see why I really like this particular run.

It looked more like you were jumping off of a small roller, then off of something with a lip. I dont know how much experience you have jumping off of ramped jumps like that. But when i used to ride dirt bikes in my youth, i did that a thousand times before i got it right.
