I want to fix the world - Step one Fix Myself

Think...This thread should be locked as OP has disappeared. Today I saw on FB a reference to BikeForums members running off a long time member in part because of how OP was treated as well as the other member as result of reactions to this thread by BF members.

Beachgrad, I think this thread has been an unfortunate chapter, but, a very "learnable lesson", in so many different ways. It's not unlikely that it might be of value to some, if it were to pop back up every once in a while as a consequence of some newbie searching through old threads. In that manner it might get read by some who will benefit from it, but, otherwise would never see it.

If it's locked, that won't ever happen.

+1. IMO, there has been a lot of denial and even downright fraud on the part of the OP throughout this thread. As for it being locked, I agree with the above poster that it should not be for the reasons noted.

Sorry, but the OP did post some pretty incredible stuff, like the $7 bag of mushrooms argument. IMO, the "grief" he got he earned.

Most of you know where I fall on this issue ... but I agree with the above ... there is value to this thread. Threads showing success and threads showing failures should be given equal measure here. If nothing else this thread shows what not to do.

And FWIW ... no one was "run off" from here. The person in question left of his own accord.

I was just wondering about this thread yesterday.

Wondering if he's gotten where he wants to be...

I was not saying that. I agree to a great degree that the criticisms and calling him out was warranted....but why leave this thread open when OP has seemed to disappear. If locked...the thread can still be searched for and read...just not added to.

that is not the tone of things that I saw on FB...whether true or not I can't say.

Dont care either way...personally but think this thread has run its course and I have a right to that opinion.

Folks, this is slightly undignified. The OP clearly had his problems; we can all draw our own conclusions about his chances of success, and sympathise with his difficulties. But there's really no merit in debating that, or commenting on his thread, in his absence. If it is no longer helpful to him it should be allowed to rest.

Consider that the OP last posted in this thread on 3/22/14. Post No. 1070 on page 43. In that post, the OP gave an "update" and said he would post some photos. Nothing that could be considered the slightest bit negative or antagonistic was posted after that until yesterday. (IMO, that post of yesterday was not negative or antagonistic, but I think some peope might consider it so.) Don't see any evidence that he was run off by reactions to this thread.

I finished reading "Wheelmen" yesterday and hadn't started anything new yet, so I just spent 2 hours reading this thread from start to finish. I have to say it held my interest. I hope the OP drops back by to give us an update from time to time.

People set a goal. They have success, they fail, they have more success.... they delude themselves then they learn they they this and that. People who are 100% rational and "have it all together" don't get as heavy as most of here gotten. I have posted in the later pages of this thread but only today did I read the whole thing. The person who made the original post is NOT the same person who came out the other side. He let go of some of his objections and progressed. I've also noticed a few in this thread who desperately wanted to "be right" in putting his failings his face. Some were "tough love" but others where just being ******.

I hope the guy is progressing.

I googled him.

There was a similar thread on an emergency weight loss board like years before he appeared here (2003 or 6 maybe?). Same initial responses, of I can'ts... then thread ends. Here, the guy made changes, then accepted things that were REALLY hard for him. Like you can't live on canned foods, no matter how cheap they seem. He made progress. You could see not only the better health, but also and as importantly far happier.

I remember his friend Neil_B's thread. They split their postings and both were making progress. There was some really harsh comments about Nersys's living situation and family business. Something else it seemed got harsh that was not present in either thread (may have been PM's, or FB related) and was very offensive to both of them. Never figured out what the people said that was so mean. Then they both stopped posting. Nersys first, Neil_b hung in longer.

Too bad, he was making HUGE progress in so many areas of his existence. I really hope that the unpleasant experiences did not cause a setback so large he retrenched. The growth he displayed was exemplary...

I personally know Nerys from my website. He is a member of GeoMetroForum.com and I met him personally at the Geo Metro meets we hold annually. I knew he started cycling, but did not know he gave up on it. I recently started cycling and made huge improvements in my health and weight loss in a matter of months because I kept getting on my bike every single day possible and refused to let my mind play games with me during certain challenges. I hope he gets back into it, but it would probably be too late.

This thread gets bumped from time to time, and I don't think I would want to close it. It demonstrates a lot of the "personality" of C&A, both positive and negative. A lot of posts are very good, examples of the forum coming together to help a person (or a few people), but it also has a lot of "experts". I believe people can still read through it and learn about the physiology and tactics of getting healthier and losing weight, regardless of the OP's "success" or not. Eventually it will probably disappear, but I don't think we want it closed. This is one of the threads that is part of our heritage as a C&A family.

I saw a recent post on the unofficial fb page which led me to look back over this situation.

I think an important lesson can be learned here that isn't being closely examined. Be cautious meeting people IRL. I was well in the loop on this situation as I was actual riding with many posters in this conversation on more than one occassion we a rode together. I was always a rider primarily for pleasure and secondarily for weight loss but some of these individuals quite literally became invested in one anothers success and diet and when the reality didn't match the virtual version things got bad. This whole scenario reached far beyond these forums into actual lives and Im not sure many people realize this.

I am extremely curious about what you mean. Are you saying that peoples' representations made in the virtual world (i.e., in this forum) didn't match what people were really doing in practice?

Yes.

It started with small things and just blew up. When you only interact with people online you're not open to such scrutiny. But like I said these became real life relationships and it created real friction. Frustration became tangible and this thread was in a lot of ways a result of that.

I think that was a part of it for sure. I had a hard time understanding why these meet ups were happening after a while. I'm trying to delicatley describe the scenario in a way does not get to involved in actual events that took place. I think this thread is important as I said in a previous post. The last thing some people on internet forums want is to be held accountable. A group of very different people met through this forum then attempted irl friendships and things didn't really work out. The realities of what was happening in the real world found their way on the forums in sometimes stark contrast of how people were portraying themselves, peoples motives and intentions were called into question and that was to heavy for some people. People willingly allowed people to know them and apparently that had uncomfortable consequences. Nobody was pushed out, but some people felt the need to be erased.

I read you loud and clear, and what you say confirms some of my suspicions.

This isn't directed towards you, but I want to say that it's great to be all Rah! Rah!, but when it becomes apparent that things aren't adding up I think that needs to be recognized.

Oh, I agree 100% and this forum puts no expectations on anyone, expectations are brought on by the poster themselves based on what they want to share.

This is in the past I just hope my post helps bring things full circle. This is a great forum, and Ive met nice people and became good friends with posters. Next time someone claims they were driven out, made a victim, or anything else involving this thread its nonsense.
