I have been super lazy about riding. But I did go out about a month ago on my birthday and rode around.

It was a balmy mid 30's and drizzling, we had rain like crazy the previous few days so the trails were flooded, but I decided to head into the woods and get off the paved trail. It was a blast! Even made a new friend.....

The river is about 4' deeper (so 10-12 feet past it's banks).

There was an old trail that ran down from the paved bike path that is across the river from this picture. As a kid I remember stopping on the other side and wondering where the old bridge went to. Never knew until now!

And my friend Dan the Deer. He was just dying to be my friend.....

I am excited about the weather getting better. We just got snow and looks like we are getting some more. Unfortunately winter tires are not in the budget this year, so I will have to wait for clearer weather.

Found ourselves at the northern most tip of the island... this was taken during the mid-ride stopover.

A loop around Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. About 1000 ft gain in the first two miles. Man it was tough to warm up ha ha!

    Going up there

Half way up. One dude up ahead walking. Straight above him, another dude on the upper section. Can only see him in the original pic (PB lost resolution)

My hartail Trek 8000. I've had the matching red front tire and rim for about 6 months but just haven't felt like putting them on ha ha!

From my ride home from work Sunday morning. Although the ambient temp was 37 degrees, that is ice on the pier. Classic example of structures like bridges freezing over first. Made for some treacherous riding!

Hard to make out, but that is the Victoria Clipper on the right making her way up to Canada, and one of our local Washington State Ferries on the left. I should have zoomed in on the mountains and gotten another shot of them, they were pretty spectacular. I kept thinking I'd get a better shot farther down the Myrtle Edwards trail, but eventually realized that as I got closer to Magnolia that the bluff was starting to block my view. Hopefully sometime this month it'll be nice out on one of the mornings I can take this route home. Come April I'll too busy with school and full time work to take this route until late June.

And I'm loving this too. Looks like a fun setup, though I always wonder if I could swing my 29" inseam over 29er.

I'd be walking some of that, too, I think. That's insane gain.

It is the first time, but mostly shock! Once you do try it a couple of times it's not so bad. After doing it a few times, you wonder why "tough" was ever a thought.

Beautiful spring day with the temperature hovering in the low twenties (Celsius) and with high cirrus clouds providing just enough cover to make things comfortable for cycling!

I've been steadily adding (dead) weight to the bicycle so I can get use to riding it loaded as I would on touring and this has also helped me gain stamina and also helped me find a rhythm or "sweet spot" in my cadence, making longer distance riding less fatiguing.

I started out once again on the southern coastal road out of Athens towards Sounio which is roughly 60 km away. On the way there, I noticed the right-most lane was coned-off and after talking to a traffic cop, I was allowed to use the closed off lane since it had been closed off for a marathon which was delayed and I was already past the starting point!

Unfortunately having passed last-weekends point where the bottom bracket started to misbehave, I received a call on my cell and was forced to turn back. Must be some bad karma on that stretch of road...

Here's some pics from this mornings ride...

The spot where something always happens and I have to turn back!

Sounio, far in the distance with the temple of Poseidon awaiting me!

    Spring is definitely here!

Got off the main road to admire the coastal province of Kavouri.

A leftover perk of having once been a courier. I had delivered to this building years before and so knew that there was an elevator that takes one from street level on Alaskan Way up to an observation deck on the 5th floor. I never dismounted my bike until I rolled up to the railing. I rolled right into the elevator and sat on my bike on the ride up, and then rolled out onto the rooftop observation deck. It was completely deserted at a little after 8AM on the Sunday morning of Daylight Savings Time.

I think our old dispatcher BJ clued me in to that elevator to get me back to downtown faster after a drop off here as there is a skybridge over to Western Avenue from here. He has the most amazing encyclopedic knowledge of the city. I'd swear he knew every elevator, walkway, disused alley, and EVERY business in the whole city, no matter how out of the way or new. When he told me about the skybridge back to Western Avenue it was brand new and he only got out of the office a few times a week. This was basically pre-internet too, so information was MUCH harder to come by. I have no idea how he knew about it.

Don't let the US flags fool you, these are a couple of Canadian navy vessels visiting. Don't know why they are flying the Stars and Stripes. I've got several more photos and info about these if anyone is interested...

    Belltown neighborhood:

A little more of downtown, a little less of the harbor and its cranes in this shot. That is a Washington State Ferry pulling into Colman Dock over on the right there, in front of the harbor crane.

Belltown on the left, Smith Tower on the far right of downtown (middle of shot). View from atop the Bell Harbor Conference Center. The steam is from Seattle's steam powerplant which still provides heat to a number of downtown businesses. Manhole covers steam as far east as Harvard on Capitol Hill.

One of the drydocks under the 15th Avenue bridge. I actually turned around on the path to come back and take this shot. That vessel in the center caught my eye. I don't think it is actually wood, but at first glance it appeared to be. I had trouble getting a pic that wasn't a little blurry here for some reason.

As I was taking the photo of the old-school looking fishing vessel alongside the Ship Canal Trail another cyclist passed by and called out "nice bike!". So I walked across the path and snapped this shot. It's not as pretty as it could be, I'm still a few minor steps away from finished with this one which will improve its appearance some, and this isn't the best shot. I'm still getting used to the camera on my new phone and it is hard to tell where the edges of the shot are. I should have repositioned the bike so that it was clearer against this background as well. She's also filthy! WAY overdue for a good cleaning!

Some from a snowy late night ride. I need to get my legs back under me and i knew there was a nice MUP nearby that is only a mile or so long itself so I figured I would go investigate. It was a quick hour ride but totally worth it. Just need to get some warmer weather so I can get my old roadie Schwinn back out and tinker with the Trek MTB.

It was an old railroad that was converted to an MUP, one of the 4 or 5 bridges, They are suppose to extend it but funding is on the short side, so the rest is dirty trails. Maybe summer time I'll ride those.

And all these post of you country bumpkins on your rides.....lets see some more cement and steel.
