OMG I'm Hungry

I'm really doing my best to get my weight down as in the new year I have a new bike on the way and my two sons and I are joining a race club but man sometimes it's hard! Today is one of those days, I've been working a lot lately to pay for new bike and I always get hungry after working nights. Oh we'll htfu and keep fighting. Been four weeks and am at 208 down from 226, ultimate goal is to get below 190, for what it's worth I'm just over 6'. I really miss my junk food, two years ago I got to 197 and I want so bad to do this. Main reason is I want to be able to keep up with my 14 year old for at least another season...

Starvation diets don't work long term, no matter what the TV shows tell you. You need to forget the word "diet" and focus on better nutrition. With good nutrition you shouldn't feel significantly hungry (at least not "starving") even at a moderate caloric deficit of 250 - 500 calories a day. Combine that with a moderate increase in activity and you can expect to lose a pound or two a week.

Drink lots of water, it helps fill you up and is good for ya. I sometimes miss junk food, but having gone from 265 to 180, I can tell you nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.

Avoid eating any large meal. Even if it's a bowl of broccoli. When you're really hungry, eat small portions and wait 30 to 45 minutes between portions. This has helped me re set my full set point. One large meal of anything and I have to start over shrinking my stomach.

Good luck!

Rather than deny yourself food, look into what goes into the food you are eating. Adopt a no-sugar, no-HFC diet and you will be amazed at how much weight you lose AND how much energy you have (after your body makes the adjustment to no longer consuming the easily unnaturally-acquired sugars and HFC).

You can find great-tasting food that doesn't have profits over healthiness, it just takes a little ground work and patience until you can find decent food that isn't loaded with sugar or preservatives. The more you do this for yourself and your your sons, the better all of you and your family will be.

Good post, but I want to add that losing weight this way also "programs" you for a healthy, permanent lifestyle.

When ever I get hungry I go for more protein - Usually the days that I am almost uncontrollably hungry are preceded by days of low protein and many carbs...

I try for the most bulk per Calorie I can get. Lots of vegetable and fruits, less meat cheese and nuts. I know everyone says nuts are great but I can eat my daily caloric recommended value in nuts during the commercial break on SOA

You definitely need to ditch junk food, but contrary to what many people think, you don't actually need to ditch food -- just eat smarter. For most people, 4-6 small meals a day is optimal, you just have to focus on what you eat and how much. For example, for breakfast, try an egg-white omelette with a slice of whole wheat toast. About 2-3 hours later, have a cup of oatmeal with a scoop of whey powder. For lunch, try a shake of coconut milk, a banana and one or two scoops of whey blended together. And for dinner, eat a sensible meal that includes salmon or another good fish and a good side, such as vegetables.

Granted, this is a lot of work, which is what makes sticking to it tough. But it does work. What a lot of people do is prep their meals at night before they go to bed and just warm them up during the day (save for the oatmeal and the shake, of course). With this kind of approach, you definitely won't be hungry and you'll be eating the right things. Paired with a good exercise program, this will work.

When your body is hungry, it's craving nutrition, not calories... you have plenty of calories stored up. Feed yourself proper nutrition, and your stomach may get empty, but you won't feel really hungry. I went from 215 to 175.

One question I'd have is: Are you actually hungry, or are you just craving something? Those are two separate things. There are times that I am hungry and a healthy snack (e.g. carrot sticks w/hummus) does the trick. There are other times when I can eat all the carrot sticks, hummus and apples I want but I'm not going to be "satisfied" until I get my hands on chocolate chip cookies (which points more to your junk food comment). That scenario is harder to suss out. If I am in a good, mindful place, I can ask myself "are you actually hungry, or is something bothering you and you're turning to food to deal with it?" If I'm not in a good mindful place, I'm too busy eating chocolate chip cookies to think about why I'm hungry. I find I make good food choices when I'm feeling good and bad food choices when I'm bothered by something or tired. In AA they teach you that you are in danger of taking a drink when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired (HALT), a concept which translates easily over to food. So the next time you're hungry (like after working late and you're tired) try that self check - it might help.

All that aside, well done you for the weight loss! Remember, the road is long and do not set any arbitrary time to get to your goal.

Snack on food with pure protein or high in fiber. The protein will take longer to digest so it will keep hunger at bay longer. Limit your carb intake to as close to zero as you can manage.

You need a min of 60 gram of carbs a day for brain function. Try to get those carbs as fruit and veggies,
