Meet Clara Hughes Today

It was a pretty exciting morning for my youngest sons school today, it's a new school that needed a name. After over 30 names the school board elected Clara Hughes Public School and today she came to the dedication. If you have never heard of Clara she is the only athlete to Medal in both summer and winter Olympics and she also rides professionally for a Women's cycling team. I was amazed at how well of a speaker she was and how genuine, she does a lot of humanitarian work for Right to Play and many other causes. I was also amazed at how incredibly fit she was!!!! My day is going to be pretty boring from here on.

The first time I saw Clara ride was at nationals on the Glenmore velodrome in Calgary back in the late 80s or early 90s. No-one knew who this teenager with the long flaming red hair was, but there she was in the pursuit final up against the reigning national champion. We knew she was going to be something special, but I don't think anyone could have predicted such a long and successful career in two sports.

Umm...no,
She may be the "only woman on a pro cycling team to medal in both summer and winter olympics" but she is not "the only person to medal in summer and winter".

Correct. She is the only Canadian to medal in both summer and winter Olympics.

Strangely, the only other woman to medal in both Olympics also did cycling and skating.

All that being said, it would have been very cool to meet her!

Cheers,
Charles

[h=1]Athletes with Winter and Summer Medals[/h] Only four athletes have won medals in both the Winter and Summer Olympics:
Eddie Eagan, USA–Light Heavyweight Boxing gold (1920) and Four-man Bobsled gold (1932).
Jacob Tullin Thams, Norway–Ski Jumping gold (1924) and 8-meter Yachting silver (1936).
Christa Luding-Rothenburger, East Germany–Speed Skating gold at 500 meters (1984) and 1,000m (1988), silver at 500m (1988) and bronze at 500m (1992) and Match Sprint Cycling silver (1988). Luding-Rothenburger is the only athlete to ever win medals in both Winter and Summer Games in the same year.
Clara Hughes, Canada—Individual Road Race Cycling bronze and Individual Time Trial Cycling bronze (1996) and 5,000 m Speed Skating bronze (2002).

Clara Hughes is probably the only American to medal in both summer and winter Olympics, but I know a few others have, too - speedskaters and Nordic skiiers from Germany/East Germany and Eastern Europe/Soviet Union who also bicycled. Most of them medaled in the team cycling events. Eric Heiden (USA speedskating medalist) also qualified for the summer Olympics as a cyclist after his speedskating golds, but finished too far back to make the podium.

It was tried in 1812. USA got a new white house and a national anthem out of the deal.
