I'm generally more tired at the end of a one hour spin class at the LBS than I am after a two hour road ride but it just is not the same. I'm also not going to discount the importance of riding a trainer in the winter. I just choose to ride outside whenever possible.

Today was one of those days, 42F with a 12 mph wind for a feels like 37 so I went and did a climb rather than go for a longer ride. 17.7 miles including 2.5 miles of average 5.8% not my best time but I'm not in nearly as good shape as I was last summer when I putting on over 100 miles a week. Hey it is December and I was able to ride my roadbike two days in a row on mostly dry and totally thawed roads, that all by itself is success, after all this is the off season.

Trainer Miles: they count yes but only mile for mile.

But on a side note, its like going into a steak house and telling them you are vegan.

Just sayin!

Another day in the 60's here in Chicagoland. Went out after dark to look at Christmas lights. I much prefer it this way rather than looking from a car. Even talked the wifey into riding along. Anyway....

December 02 = 11.41 miles

MTD = 26.75

Not entirely sure what my riding goal should be this month. Last month I was able to do a little over 250, but this month I have other things that have to take priority over cycling.

I think maybe 150 miles with 5,000' of elevation gain would be good numbers to shoot for.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure I could if I had the time, and didn't have other priorities. Plus, when there was still sunlight after work, I would add 8-10 miles and 600-700' of elevation gain on my commute home. I'm still going to try to maintain my goal of commuting at least once a week throughout the year.

So far:

12/3: 23 miles / 350' - Commute

Goal: 150 miles / 5,000'
MTD: 23 miles (15%) / 350' (7%)

Gotcha. I'll take what I can get. I'm not afraid of any cold, but once the ole Ohio snow machine kicks in, I'm indoors.

Managed to start the month off today, a little later than I wanted though.

12/4 - 15.5 miles in a stiff headwind and rain.

My miles will be on spin bikes and the like for a while. I'm counting them, and frankly I don't give a flying Leipheimer what anyone else thinks.

12/2 - 3
12/4 - 3

Couple of unusual warm days to start December so have 41 miles so far. But really not expecting much this month. Although would like to get approx. 100 miles to raise yearly total to 2300 miles. But like last month, as soon as I pick a goal, the weather turns cold, windy and wet.

12/5/2012 - 25.5 miles with 1286 feet of gain. LBS has me back on the road again at no cost to me. SRAM sent two new rings, bolts and even a new crank. Beautiful sunny 50 degree ride with only a 7mph breeze blowing. Can't ask for better in December in this part of the world.

MTD: 25.5 with 1286 feet of gain in 1 ride.

For December, I'm already (ha ha...already) at 31 miles. I'm new, less than 100 miles total under my belt, got the bike Nov 4. The area I ride is on the side of a ridge connecting the valley floor to the Sierra Nevada mountain range and goes from 1000' at the lowest point to around 3000'. My 'training' route is about 7-9 miles, depending on how far I can make it up hill. I start around 1820', ride about a mile and drop to around 1500'. Then it's uphill for however long I can manage. Usually, I can get about 4 miles and that takes me to around 2300', so 800' of elevation change. The uphill is all on a rail trail through the center of town. Then I hop off at the top and ride back down through surface streets to the house. My goal, by the end of the month, is to go down to the 1100' marker where the trail begins and make it the 8 miles to the top of the trail at around 2800'. I've made it to the top - once. But I started around the 1700' level. So anyway, total for December should be about 120.
