My plan to avoid gaining weight over the winter

It's December, the holidays are coming and I'm thinking how am I going to keep from gaining weight over the winter as seems to always be the case for as long as I can remember. Yes I know, it's about exercise and eating right but if it were just that easy it wouldn't be a problem. I know what to do, it's just difficult for me to get my butt in gear to do it. What I need is motivation. I need a challenging cycling goal for 2013 that I feel pressure to train for. It has to be tough otherwise I'll just put it off until it's closer and I need peer pressure to keep me from backing out. I wrote a blog post last night to get my thoughts down, pick my challenge and figure out how to find the peer pressure I need. You could be that peer pressure. Heck, you could join me if you want to. Check is out at Set a Cycling Challenge That’s Difficult and Use It as Motivation. Are you up for a challenge?

I'm in. I'm riding the GAP and C & O with a friend in August. I need to be back in good physical condition by then.

I rode the GAP and C&O this year. I loved the GAP, the C&O not so much. Big difference in the condition of the two. More crushed stone on the GAP and we had rain so plenty of mud on the C&O.

I've done both three times in 2008 and 2009, and sections since. But the Bike Forums poster I'm riding with has never toured, and invited me to join him. Anyway, I'm tremendously out of shape from the layoff due to my bilateral knee replacement and subsequent complications. Its good to have a goal, even if its one you've done before.

BTW ignore those 'real bike tourists' who told you your trip doesn't count. They remind me of the posters here who say I'm not a "real cyclist." I suppose that makes me a surreal cyclist.....

I to need goals to keep on track, I didn't have anything planned for this year and started season at 248lbs. I did ride a lot and got as low as 206 but am back to 218. This year we did a 380k ride and my goal is to cut an hour off the ride time for next year. I also want to better my time on a few certain steep nasty hills but most of all I need to keep up with my son and nephew.
