    May find my riding derailed

Due to the recent knee pain that has curtailed my riding...and then the increased pain in my hip, I figured I should contact my ortho doc about getting back in.

A little Hx: Summer of 2011 I found I was having really bad pain in left hip and if walked or stood for too long my legs and feet went numb especially on left side. I delayed seeing Doc due to $ until I had money again in my flex plan. So got in finally in late 2011 to see my PCP. X-rays of hip and lower back were done. X-rays revealed mild degenerative arthritis...and partially torn labrum. MRI was then ordered to get better info and was referred to ortho. Had MRI done on hip. Saw Ortho and he ordered MRI on lower spine. MRI on spine was 1/18/12 and last visit to Ortho was 2/6/12.

My ortho was not super approachable and clear. He referred me to the back clinic for the spine issue (lumbar spinal stenosis). I did not understand that the wanted me BACK in 4 weeks or that among his plans for me was to perform arthroscopic on my hip. I found this out YESTERDAY when my PCP pulled up the ortho doc notes on the computer. My last visit on Feb 6 was prior to me getting busy riding and finding I really enjoyed it....nearly 2300 miles later....I was using OTC anti-inflammatory meds and occasional Vicodin to manage pain etc. Until the knee pain suddenly appeared...I was dealing with things I thought.

Read up on arthroscopic of hip and am not thrilled at ALL.

May screw up my plans to ride the Tour de Palm Springs and other things.

Will know more once I get back in to see the ortho doc.
    Move along....nothing to see here....anymore.

Ugh! Not sure what else to say, other than Ugh!

Glad you're trying to get it all taken care of correctly instead of just masking the symptoms. Hope they have answers with easy fixes!

Worse thing in the world you can do is start jumping to conclusions regarding your condition and what you read on the internet. There is no doubt that your exercise and weight loss is helping you. And like most of us, I am sure there is more we could do to improve our weight and conditioning.

When you see the Doc, but adamant that you want to continue your exercise and get recommendations on how you could do that. Its easy for them to just prescribe drugs, as that is what most americans want, if you show a genuine interest in improving through diet and exercise, the doc should want to support that if possible. (I am not suggesting diet and exercise is the cure for everything, but it clearly is for many things we currently take meds for).

Agree - don't want to jump to conclusions based on internet. Just reading what the recovery is for hip arthro is a bit daunting with regard to being able to ride. But doc notes did have as part of plan arthro...so right now I'm just a bit freaked as I don't want to have my riding interrupted if I can help it. But right now it IS interrupted as my knee is too painful and am concerned knee pain is somehow related to issue in hip...maybe been compensating and has resulted in knee issue.

Once I referral is processed I can get in to see Ortho and ask questions that I SHOULD have been more assertive to ask last Feb. Learned lesson...if don't understand don't leave w/o asking for clarification. I hope we can come up with a plan that allows me to ride if that is possible. I don't want to just medicate and mask if that is just going to cause more problems but will see what he says.

Possibly slightly shorter cranks would help. You don't have to bend the joints quite as much.
Going from 175 > 170 >165MM made a world of difference regarding knee pain for me.

And write down your questions before you go. I always end up forgetting to ask something and kick myself later.

If your ortho isn't doing it for you, you're welcome to try mine out for a second or third opinion... my wife also goes to her for her hip issues and she's currently treating my shoulder. She's a terrific doctor & very personable. Her office is in the Whittier Pres complex, which isn't too far from you.

PM me the doc name. If she is on my plan...might be worth a shot!

    Get yourself fixed up.
Best thing about cycling is when I'm at work I'm thinking of cycling, when I'm cycling I'm thinking about cycling.

Ha! I think I'm a retirement plan for the lady that runs the PT place down the hill from my house. I have a frequent flier card. I've been in there for 3 different joints in the last 6 years or so.

Early this year while running I was too hard headed to stretch, and my left knee freaked out on me. I had a met a PT at a running store so I went to see him. He shoved one leg this way, and the other one that way, and did some little twist, and I have never felt so much pain in all my life. I think I actually shrieked like a little girl.

Anyway 3 or 4 torture sessions later, i was all good....now I stretch

I agree with the post on shorter cranks. I have had knee pain for decades. I was experiencing knee discomfort riding my hybrid with 175's. Got my road bike and replaced the standard with a triple. I used 170's, and have considerably less pain and discomfort. Probably shoulda went to 165's. I will on my next bike. Try shorter cranks, should help.

OMG, I'm glad none of you have heard them working on my shoulder... apparently the tendons & muscle from my pec to my shoulder are crazy tight and have pulled my shoulder forward in the socket. So when that tiny little PT woman is digging around it's excruciating. Apparently I'm a sensitive lad.

Wonder how you find an ortho that TRULY understands cycling....or do most of them by nature of their training. I don't know....never been to one.

Hoping doc is aware. I wasn't really riding when I saw him last...so now that I care whether I can ride, I will know better what to ask

You can find docs who specialize in a particular sport or two, that's probably your best bet... but those guys are probably unavailable in California (you see a lot of cycling pros here?)

My second knee doctor is the Laker's team doctor, by total happenstance...

But anyway, they tend to specialized in a particular body part or two more than specialize in a particular sport. Some injuries are sport specific (like the one requiring Tommy John surgery, a repair for a common pitching injury) so a particular doc may be well known for his expertise in a certain procedure also.

This is just anecdotal stuff picked up from about 10 years of serially visiting orthopods, 5 surgeries & a narrowly averted sixth. Don't get hit by a car, that's all I can say.

Ok, got my referrals and have set up appts with the doc at "back clinic" for my spine issues (1/9) and with ortho doc for hip/knee issues (1/11). Been off the bike (last ride was 11/26). Went for a massage today. Hoping maybe that will help. Hoping to take a spin tomorrow and get to sport my C/A jersey....have I mentioned I the jersey?

Understand you are on a path with referrals and such, but here's my 2 cents anyway.

Mrs. Zoxe had an issue with her leg that we didn't truly understand until we got into a sports med center. We live in Indianapolis, and the center we ended up at is the same facility that treats the Colts, Pacers, and local Olympians. Her doc is the "official doctor" for the local minor league hockey team. Suddenly things became very clear and straightforward, the docs were much more personable, and questions were answered concisely. She ended up having a minor surgery, but it is what should have happened years ago (previous docs' advice was actually making things worse).

I wish we could have taken a short cut to get here, but instead we spent 4 years with various family docs scratching their heads and passing us on to the next referral.

I don't know how much of this would apply to you, so I guess my point is: don't accept mediocre strategy and guessing at your expense.

    Appreciated.

I will be more assertive and if I still feel im not getting what i need with this ortho doc, I will request new one.

Tho don't think there is any real mystery as I know 1. Torn labrum 2 degenerative arthritis and 3 cyst in left hip. Plus early spinal stenosis (ortho not involved with spine issue...hence back clinic).

Part of the problem is me....I ran out of $ to keep going to Doc. Was loving riding and lots of pain meds were helping me ride and lose weight. Think losing nearly 40 lbs has helped some as joints are not having to carry around as much of me.

Took the bike out today for a ride to see how my knee feels after nearly 3 weeks of "rest". Not good as it turns out. I planned on going to Seal Beach and back which to me is a "short" ride of about 17 miles RT. I turned around as knee was painful and at times excruciatingly so. Interesting that I can avg 12.9 mph when I was taking it EASY due to PAIN.

Saw. Ortho doc today. Based on location of pain/discomfort he feels Arthro on hip not needed at this time! YAY. Gave me cortisone shot in hip as he thinks my pain is bursa related. Have next appt in 4 weeks after the tour de Palm Springs. Knee looks great, no arthritis. Probably was bothered by overuse and inflamed . Keep eye on it.
