Looking some advice on rims/tires.

First off hello

I finally started my new lifestyle this morning. I am very happy about it. I am currently 5'11" and 250lbs which I hoping to change through the magic of diet and cycling.

Almost as if the universe is giving a sign I was looking for a new bike to help this process and oddly enough I got one from my brother for xmas (in January). The bike is a 2013 Kona Sutra (c56) which is a great bike and as I observed expensive.

My current delima is however regarding the rims/tires which are the stand ones Kona use. The tires are: Continental Contact 700x32C and the rims are: Freedom by WTB Ryder 21.

I was wondering if other new if these would hold my weight or would I risk damaging them? The reason I ask is because the back tire tends to compress a decent amount when I am not moving and it has me concerned that I need to get different rims and/or tires too be able to use this fantastic bike I have thought of increasing the pressure in the tires but I am again caustious not to risk damage to the bike.

If anyone has any advice of this stuff it woudl be greatly appreciated

IF necessary, you can go up to the max pressure listed on the sidewall. Actually a bit more, but you shouldn't need to.
Too low a pressure and you risk damaging the rim if you hit a pothole etc. Also the possibility of snakebite flats.

You should be fine. I am same height and 270-280 and run a WTB rim with Continental Tour Ride 37c and I have no problems. It sounds like you need to run more air pressure in the rear tire.

You shouldn't worry too much about the tires and rims. The tires will be fine. I toured on tires of similar width while carrying a load of gear. With me and the gear, I far exceeded your weight. Rims don't really contribute much to the overall strength of the wheel. The spokes do all of the heavy lifting so you should be more concerned with them than with the rim. Your spokes will probably be fine as well but, if anything on the wheel will fail, it is going to be a spoke. Keep 'em tight and have the wheel checked from time to time especially when it is new.

Yes those rims and tires will handle your weight just fine. Just spend that money on all the other goodies for cycling.
