Did I get ripped off?

I decided to bid on a 2013 Shimano Sora group set. My current bid is $157 with $10 shipping. I couldn't find many places selling it, and if they did it seemed a bit over priced.

"This is the group set that came on my 2013 Specialized Roubaix Compact bike. It has about 100 miles on it. It includes:
Crankset Sora 50-34 175mm
Sora bottom bracket
Sora 9 speed shifters
Sora braze on front derailleur
Sora rear derailleur
Shimano 11-30 cassette
KMC X9 nickel plated chain
Apex front and rear brakes"

Isn't the full set over $300 if bought separately? I really hated my 2300 with the thumb shifters, and I figured if I payed $350 + $167 for the Sora, the bike only set me back $517, which is still $200 less than a new 1.1 but with better components (except maybe the wheels). This means I won't need to upgrade my bike for a while, since the new Sora is supposed to be quite good for what I use it for.

For $167 I think you did fine.

What do you think it would cost to get it installed?

Not hard to do your self. Then take it down and have a shop give it a once over. Mine did that for free.

Easy for someone who knows how to. I worked on big rigs for years, put a bike in front of me and my brain hurts.lol

I don't see how if you bid on an item, if its way over or way under priced you could say you were ripped off? Your own choice to set a bid price precluded being ripped off, unless the seller lies. Talk about playing the victim. Grow a pair and take responsibility.

:troll:

My understanding was he was asking if he paid an ok price for the parts,

If I found out I won but was ripped off then I would have had to pay or else they'd close my PayPal account. Unfortunately I lost the bid. It sold for $207.

I see Howsteepisit's point. You really can't call it being "ripped off" when you bid, even if you overpaid for the value of what you got, as long as the seller accurately represented what was being sold. Auctions are buyer beware, make sure you know what the item is worth and how much you are willing to pay BEFORE you place a bid. If I bid $2,000 for an old Schwinn Varsity, that's on me, not the seller. The only time you can call an auction a rip off is when what is delivered does not reasonably match the description or the seller doesn't deliver after accepting payment.

Functionally, Sora is the same as 2300 isn't it? Still has the thumb button instead of the paddle.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think they upped the ante with Sora for 2013(?)

bassjones 02-04-13 11:24 AM

Honestly, if you're going to upgrade, I'd skip Sora and go straight to Tiagra, maybe even 105. Sora isn't that much better than 2300

Then they need to update their web site. Still showing Sora having the thumb button.

I'm pretty sure Sora upgraded to the paddles as well for 2013.

Yes, a quick search elsewhere confirmed that. Not sure why Shimano hasn't updated their site.

Rowan 02-04-13 04:48 PM

The answer is no. Someone else won it with a much higher bid.

ChargerDawg 02-04-13 06:51 PM

Nope, I sold a Sora set of brifters for $165 couple of years ago. I did not like the thumb button... I had purchased Ultegras for 220..

melvinator 02-04-13 07:11 PM

Hey I bid on that group set last night too!!!

TrojanHorse 02-04-13 07:16 PM

Why does everybody and his dog hate the thumb shifters on Sora/2300 but Campy people love it? Is there a functional difference?

Honest question, I swear. :)

Really funny. I was once in a pinch, my Ultegra shifter pooped out on me right before Ride Around the Bear. I had them installed about 2 weeks before the ride and planned to use them for a month or two. Heck, they worked flawlessly for a year. Only reason I changed them was because I found excellent sales on Dura Ace.

I never had a problem with the thumb shifters. If they made all brifters this way, it wouldn't phase me at all. I don't see the big deal. ;)

Indeed, and no-one I've asked can give a decent answer except for the maker's marks.
