Went for a ride with a group called 'Toowoomba Bicycle User Group'. They mainly do advocacy but they also do a ride every second Sunday. I was assured it would be very casual.

We left at 6:30 from the centre of town. I think I was the youngest at 38 and I was the only clyde. There were about 12 people on a mix of tourers, road bikes, mountain bikes (like my giant) and a tandem. I thought things were going ok until we hit somewhere called 'Prince Henry Heights'. I know I live on top of a mountain but I had no idea there were roads this steep that cyclists would ride for fun. I did ok but had to walk the bike for about 100m.

Then we headed up to a place called 'the wiggles' which is basically the higest point in the city. Most of the riders went on to ride the local crit track while I had a break, then we all met up for coffee about 5km from where we started. Then we all went our separate ways. It was an easy ride home, it's was mostly downhill and it's basically the same as my commute home from work.

All up a good morning of riding. Sadly I will miss the next ride as I will be in Melbourne but hopefully I can go on others in the future.

I think I am moving closer to my goal of a metric century this year.

The seat post on his bike is interesting. Am I seeing it correctly, it looks like it's a circular seat post, for some added "vertical compliance perhaps?

Yes, lots of vertical compliance. I think it's some kind of sprung seatpost. It moves down and back when he goes over bumps.

Very cool on the ride. I am scared of hills like that so I tend to shy away from long group rides.
