I crunched a squirrel. It darted out in front of me, stopped; darted off the road; then doubled back and tried to go between the wheels. I felt bad. It was gone 15 minutes later, something else ate it.

I've had some close calls with really big deer while I was blasting downhill >30mph. That expression "like a deer in the headlights" was invented for a reason. Rutting season is particularly scary.

Another startling episode was rounding a corner only to find 6 very large vultures making a roadkill deer disappear. Vultures don't have very fast take-offs after they've been dining a while, and these just barely got out of the way before I plowed through.

Not yet. I have a bell on my bike I ring when I see the little buggers. They scatter.

...I don't want blood on my wheels.

Had one jump through the spokes once when I was 14. Didn't turn out pretty for either of us. I survived but the squirrel didn't.

The first week I starting riding, I had two squirrels literally jump into my spokes and bounce off 1-2 feet backwards. They were dazed, but both ran off. Since then, I've ridden directly at them, allowing them to either go left or right and save their lives. Have yet to smash one. Both times prior I would go to one side and the dummies would always slam into my spokes.

I've never hit anything while riding, lucky so far. You are as well, as you didn't crash. Glad it worked out ok for you in that regard.

I got hit by a deer one time, highly unpleasant and very scary. Not sure how I stayed up, I am pretty sure we surprised each other. I may have hit him, really not sure.

I took out a little birdie once. Riding a back-country highway, no shoulder. I notice this little bird just right of the line. I kept watching him, waiting for him to fly off. I guess he was looking the other way, because he hopped up right into my path as I passed. Squish. Felt kinda bad about that one. I kept thinking about George Costanza. I thought we had a deal?!?

I've clipped a couple of squirrels over the years, but they seem to dart away in relatively good health. There are lots of rabbits on my morning commute. They make me nervous because they always scatter in every direction when you approach.

Had one try to go nose first into my front spokes during a downhill. Knocked him out for a couple of minutes, then he ran away. I'm sure he didn't feel good after that.

Mostly here in Texas we have big grasshoppers that sit on the road in front of you and jump up at the last second and bounce off of you.
