On my way to ride today, blessed by a homeless guy!

Gina and I ate at Jack in the Box this morning. I had seen this homeless dude in there before. He walks through and asks people for money. Very timid guy. Poor guy is totally dirty, even looks like he's growing mold on his forehead. I always so no figuring he's going to spend it on booze. After you tell him no, he just says thank you and walks away quietly. Today he did the same and I said no. He then walked over to the trash can inside, dug through it for a minute then pulled out an old dirty french fry and ate it. Oh my gosh, he must be asking for money for food. So I ask Gina for a dollar then call him over and give it to him. I think about it then ask if he'd like something to eat. He said yes so I walked over to the counter with him and ordered a Jumbo Jack combo. I was afraid the counter person would not take his order so I ordered for him as he was totally dirty and his jacket ripped to shreds. Then I handed him the ticket then he thanked me.

It was heartbreaking to see this dude happy with an old french fry form the trash container. But he was so happy, he sat at the corner table and munched on his combo. When we were walking out, Gina asked if I wanted to give him another $5. OK, lets! So we did and then he blessed us with a smile. Wow, to see this guy in total shambles. Not knowing how he got there, sure it could have been his doing but at this point, it doesn't matter. We had a chance to make his day and we did. Heck, we even got blessed by a homeless guy!

This is so heartwarming.

Great story - you and the lovely missus definitely rock.

Thanks! ;).........Funny at times I think man, being a working stiff sucks! But then I think about it, I have a lovely wife, lovely bikes (:D) and can pretty much do whatever I want in this world. So to see this guy dig a french fry out and be happy he had something to put in his mouth was like a kick back into reality.

Thank you for your act of kindness Mr.Beanz

Reminds me of the following phrase;
[h=1]To the barefoot man, happiness is a pair of shoes.
To the man with old shoes, it’s a pair of new shoes.
To the man with new shoes, it’s more stylish shoes.
And of course, the fellow with no feet would be happy to be barefoot.

Hey that's really the most amazing thing you could do. I confess also to giving a take-out curry box to a homeless guy once. I nearly always give them money if they are decent about asking for it. Sometimes I tell them to be sure and spend this on cigarettes and whiskey (they look at me as if I'm nuts). When I was on holy days in LA in noted there are a lot of homeless in the santa-monica/venice area (also eating stuff out of the dumpster). Sometimes I wonder if I should try living "house-free" for a while myself. Some guys do it and they have a job and they clean themselves at work and stay pretty normal, except that they sleep in a hidden place and stay out of trouble.

Good on both of you!
Hopefully your compassion will be mimicked by others and some day the homeless fellow will be given an opportunity to improve his life.

It's surprisingly easy in this day and age to loose everything; I know because I've almost been there at a point in my life, and except for the need of sustenance for the body, these fallen people also need respect... that's for the soul!

Grandma used to say "You never know when you'll meet an angel in disquise" which was her take on Jesus' statement "What you have done to the least of these, you have done to me".

Good job and God bless.

So true.

A variation I have heard is "I complained I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet".

Good job and God bless.

See, also, Matthew 6:1-4.

May you all have a blessed Resurrection Day.

Good Job, Mr Beanz. I don't have too many homeless around me that I would get near (most don't beg and keep to themselves here) but someone like that, I'd likely buy them food as well if they were that starving. I might not make a ton, but A few bucks won't break me, ever.

Happy Easter :)

nkfrench 03-31-13 01:07 PM

I saw an older couple riding their bicycles to a fast food restaurant. They had nice but practical clothing and decent bikes. On closer inspection, they were very thin and everything was clean but very worn. I bought them food and they ate every single bit of it as if they were starving. I didn't ask questions, preferring to believe that I did an act of kindness.

Cash - I've been scammed too many times, including by my younger sister.

Nice!:thumb:

Of course ther are the 3 guys sitting at a table playing on their internet cell phones asking for money as well, get the hell outta here, I don't even have the net on my cell!

The 21 y/o guy standing outside the market with a $300 skateboard, smoking a cegarette wearing some nice looking skater shoes asking for money. Gina gets bothered by these guys. More than twice their age, having to go to work every day and they expect us to give them money? sheesh!

But when you see someone appreciate food,, you know they're hurting. That's why we gave this guy another $5. Figure he'd save it for another meal, if not, he had a good day! ;)

+1. If I gave $5 to, and bought a meal for, every homeless person I see every day I would need to take out a second mortgage. Every once in a while I will occasionally give Lawrence, a guy in a wheel chair who hangs outside my local liquor store, my change when I walk out. At least I know he's putting it to good use. :)

Back in the early 90s there was an infamous scammer in Philly. He would purchase some sort of bloody meat (probably liver), stuff it in his shirt and walk up to someone claiming to have been stabbed. He would then hit them up for cab fare to the hospital.

Then there was the well-dressed, well-spoken fellow who would claim to have come to town for an interview and had his briefcase with his wallet and train ticket home to D.C. in it stolen. People gave him A LOT of money. He would even take their names and addresses and promise to mail a check. He was finally arrested, but not before he scammed an untold number of people.

Great to hear a positive story come out of this... personally I've become so numb living in NYC with all the panhandlers and supposed homeless people asking for money. Warms the heart that you were able to make someone's day ... sometimes its the little things in life that fills everyone :)

Random Acts of Kindness.

I am guilty of being stingy at times, but I try to give when I can. My wife and I once went into a Lego store and bought a kid some expensive Legos and gave his parents the change. Turns out it was his birthday (didn't know that until I handed him the bag) and they only had a budget of $15 for his present. The Lego kit he mentioned he liked the most cost several times more than that and the change was enough where they could go to a nice sit-down restaurant for the 5 of them. My wife and I were in tears walking away from them watching them break down.

Best part is, believing as I do, I was instructed to go to this Lego store on that particular day, at that particular time to find a kid in a particular jacket.

Such an awesome feeling, so I know where you're coming from Beanz!
