my aching body
I don't know why I did it, I don't know how I managed to do it, but I rode 40 miles Saturday, and my legs have been on fire since. And now it's Monday and my thunder-thighs are still on fire, but like the old saying goes "No pain, no gain."

Stretch.
Before you leave and especially every several hours after you finish. It will hurt while you stretch, but it will make the soreness go away faster.
Drink more water.

You will feel better soon! And the benefits will continue a lot longer. Good for you for pushing yourself. Every time you ride this distance, it will "hurt" less and less, (if you go at the same effort level). Eventually, you won't even feel it at all, but your body will thank you for taking care of it.

Good for you on over-reaching. Just realize that when you suddenly extend the training volume it takes longer to recover and repair. Over time, your ability to recover from a 40 miler will get quicker as your body adapts. When you ride next time, go slower than normal, maybe work on smooth pedaling form. You just what to get a little extra blood flow going to help rebuild.

Nice job. Great accomplishment. Next time, 40 miles won't seem so daunting! And the pain is just a reminder of how well you did!

I assume you ride at a comfortable pace, and 40 miles took you 3 hours or more. How much water did you really drink on that ride, and how long did you ride. Then how much did you drink the rest of the day. I am the most sore if I come into a ride dehydrated, and / or dont drink well during the ride. One days I do centuries, I find I have to drink about 16 oz of water every hour or two for the rest of the day in order to be in halfway decent shape the next day.

Good job on pushing your boundaries!
For me, a timely recovery drink followed by a meal with a good bit of protein really helps with the next day soreness. Also, an easy recovery ride the next day really works.

It may sound counter intuitive but go for a short bike ride the day after a big ride... maybe just for 45 minutes and don't ever get out of your lowest possible gear. Recovery = so easy you feel silly. Or sit on a trainer and just spin your legs for a bit... it definitely helps.
Other than that, everything above is valid - well done! Once you get used to it you'll find that 40 miles requires no more preparation or thought than a 10 mile ride does now.
