Warm weather yay!
It's supposed to be above my "Hell no" temperature almost all week, I'm thinking maybe it's a week that I commute every day... On the other hand, I'm sore from riding 30 miles Saturday, and my 10 miles today was rough. I'm thinking maybe it'd be best if I took a rest day tomorrow, and then finished up my April goals Tuesday, while and then getting a solid start on whatever number I should set for May.
Of course, if I want to do a SF Bayside trail tour in June, getting a lot of miles in consecutively would probably be a good idea. Anyone else ramp up to riding heavy for several days in a row, and have any tips? |

You're in Campbell?
HTFU. It snowed in Minnesota last week. |
Neil that's a good tip, I hadn't heard that before. I was sore in a few new places from riding a bit too many commutes in a row, so I did end up taking a rest day.

I'll meet you on the hottest road and see who can ride farther. Did you want to do Phoenix or Death Valley? Then we can talk.

I did a short MTB ride yesterday. Garmin and strava site both say the average temp was 91/92 degrees. The 1,000 ft climb is mostly in the first 3 1/2 miles and it felt like 200 degrees.:D Not really that hot but when it goes from cool to hot, it seems to affect you more on the bike. Hopefully these hot but not so hot temps help acclimate me to the summer heat before it gets here.:thumb:
My shades were thrashed with sweat and I had to pull over a couple of times to get the sweat out of my eyes, couldn't see and burned like a MOFO. :p |
Looking at a forecast of lows in the mid-50s in your zip code, I have to wonder what your "hell no" temperature is. As an acquaintance of mine has said "there is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices."

Very interesting idea, what is your "hell no" temp? :D I'm not sure of mine, done long flat ride in 100+ temps but didn't have a Garmin back then to record data. Training for a big mtn climb event I trained in 100+ temps doing 5,000 ft of climbing (GMR to village). But again, can't be sure of the average temps as it was pre Garmin back in 09. But last year Gina I did a long flat 70 miler with an average temp of 94 degrees and a high of 105 according to the Garmin on Strava and Garmin Connect. I was hot but Gina was right on the edge so I would say her "hell no" average temp must be 95! :D http://connect.garmin.com/activity/209387187 http://app.strava.com/activities/17976421 |
My range is 45-85, so I ride earlier in the summer. :)

As you guys start getting the warm stuff its going the other way down here in Oz, here in Western Australia we dont get to the point of snow but there will be plenty of rain and wet roads heading our way from here on in.... enjoy the sunshine :)

Below 55F I don't have the gear or desire to bother.
Pretty sure I can easily handle into the 110 range, and can probably tolerate into the 120 range. And it's rare that we get 105 measured, but with urban heat soak that can be a little higher on the pavement. Try driving a racecar on the track in 105 degree temps with track surface temps in the 140 range, done that. Trader, save up as much of that water as you can! You never know what next summer will be like. |
My wife's aunt lives in Phoenix and she reported it was 102 degrees earlier this week. That's way too hot for me! My "riding temperatures" average between around 45-80 degrees (in the sun) but I can be talked into "canopy rides" if it's warmer. When it gets overly warm, I don't MTB. A few years ago I MTB'd in near-100 degree weather and suffered heat exhaustion. It worried me to the point I'm scared to do it again.

So far I haven't found a "hell no" temp as long as the roads are reasonably clear. Hell, today was the second day above 50 this spring. I've been riding frequently in 25-35 degree weather, usually with 15+ mph winds which are the norm in spring around here. I'll admit that I've never ridden at 120F but I've ridden at over 100 without too much difficulty (just went through a lot of water/sports drink).

We're not too bad in El Paso yet, mostly 80s with some cooler days. The early morning commute temperature is 60 or so which is the temperature God was thinking about when he invented Bicycling.
