Where did you ride on the eastern shore? My wife and I rode a few weeks back through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and then along the eastern shore a a bit west of Cambridge Md. Nice rides, lots of country rides that are well paved for riding skinny tires.

just needed to post:
i finally broke the double digit mileage barrier. it was sprinkling all day and i cut my early ride short, so i said screw it and threw on my water repelling hoody and went out. i found a path and just went with it and ended up a lot further away from my house than i had ever dared to go. the rain was my motivation because i figured the longer i dilly dallied the more likely it was to start pouring so i didn't take breaks. i heard 11 miles from my phone and did an extra lap around the block to get it up to 12.
i ended up with 12.36 miles in 1 hour and 4 minutes and i couldn't be more pumped right now.
to anyone starting out and nervous about mileage/speed, don't sweat it at all. i was doing 1 ride a day around the block twice less than a month ago.
i will say though, don't let your mind tell you how far you're riding. when i ride my set path it's too easy to stop where i know i can and get tired right near a bench, but when i take random rides where i kind of get lost i ride way more mileage because i have to to get back home. now i don't have a ride home right now if something happens, and i highly recommend that you have a plan B if something goes wrong that far away from home so you don't have to walk your bike 2 1/2 miles back to your house like i did a few weeks ago.

Another way to help you go longer and further is to buddy up with a friend or go on a club or cycle shop ride.

luckily i'm wrapping up my projects out here and will be moving back to Maryland this summer. i'm moving to Baltimore though, so i can live in somewhat affordable housing (for Maryland standards anyway) until I'm ready to buy a place.

gotta do a little 6/7 month bump here. took a lot of time off between moving, being out of town for work, and pneumonia which lasted a month (i can't think of a time i've felt worse for that long).
anyway, since the weather has been rainy i've been doing a lot more jogging. it sucks way worse than bike riding, but thanks to buying a pair of "barefoot" shoes (not the toe kind) i learned a midfoot strike and it stopped the problems i was having with my back while running. i'm looking to run a 5k in the spring, no matter how slow.
i'm down 13 lbs, but my bike is hanging on the wall looking depressed. i decided to take it out today, not checking the weather and was pushed sideways twice. had to basically ride around in a short circle to return home. checked the wind and it was 30+mph. i don't know how anybody could do that. i put a lot of pressure down on the wheels, but my bike moved sideways twice and it was a scary feeling on the road.
anyway, i obviously still have a long way to go but the reason i'm posting here again is i've found a charity ride i want to do:
https://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?fr_id=9356&pg=entry
it's an hour away and i want to do the 35 miles. i've never been on the bike for more than 13-14 miles, but i know i can do this. the cause also means a lot to my wife, so there's some extra motivation in that.
just wanted to share with you guys in case any other DMV guys/gals were looking to test themselves. there's also a 10 mile ride, but i want to go big. not 63 mile big, but still more than i've ever done.
so here's to having a mild winter so i can get these miles in!
