About a week or so ago, I broke a spoke and bent another on the stock wheels on my CAAD8 (its about 2 mos old or so). This caused the rear wheel to be quite wibbly wobbly and drag terribly on the brakes Took the bike in to get it fixed, they replaced 2 spokes and retrued the wheel etc. Cost me 40 bucks.

Sat, I put in my first 20 mile ride ever, and Sunday I did 8 or so. I get back in the house on Sunday, and I hear *PING* from behind me. Another one let go. Took it in, and they hung on to it till the GM came in. Went in today, and he replaced front and back with the wheels from a CAADX 105 at no charge. I also got the tubes and tires from those wheels when they swapped my Contis across.

I was expecting to pay a couple of bills for a new, beefier wheel, and walked out at no charge.

Quite satisfied.

Nice! Love it when that happens. What wheels did they give you? I'm not up on the latest CAAD X specs. And I don't recall your current weight. Only asking because if the new wheels are going to cause trouble too, it may be a good time to sell them and buy serious wheels that will hold up. Just a thought. In any event, I like hearing stories like this. Gives me hope in humanity!

Nice to hear your LBS is taking care of you.

One should never look in the mouth of a gift horse, however, to provide those replacement wheels with the best possible opportunity to provide a reasonable service life, ensure that they have been repeatedly stress relieved and the tension between spokes equalized or balanced at the recommended upper limit for the rims in question.

I'm ~ 260 or so. And the wheels are Maddux DRX 6000. They seem a bit beefier than the RS 3.0 wheels that were on there.

For now, I'm gonna ride them till they fail, and save for a better wheelset.

Congrats on the new wheel and love hearing about good LBS's!

I am also suffering from some spoke woes and I think my question might be close enough on topic to put as a kicker on your topic. I just broke a spoke last night and the LBS i got my bike from was closed so I had to goto another place to get the spoke replaced (want to learn how to do myself but dont have the tools or experance to DIY) and was $40 bucks which is brutial cause my budget is so tight and I am desprate to get my 1000km strava badge for may which is a little outside my fitness level.

I digress, I just got a new bike at the end of last season and the bike is rated at 275 pounds for its weight limit. I only have a 1000 miles on the bike so far and broke the spoke yesterday and had to have rear wheel trued twice. Its a Alex Rim 32 spoke double wall 700c from a 2012 Specialized Tricross. Does this sound wierd, or are those rims crap? or Am I too heavy for them? Whole time I owned bike I am 250 pounds and hopefully dropping never been over 260 during that time.

I am just wondering cause previous bike was a 1999 Giant Sedona 26" 36 spoke single walled rims with a majority of the 10,000 miles ridden at weights 300 to 360 pounds and only broke a spoke once and only needed to be trued twice the whole time I owned it.
