1rst ride in 2mo, after breaking clavicle

7 weeks ago I was a bad boy and broke my clavicle. It's been an absolutely horrible recovery for all sorts of complicated reasons. The only good thing was how I did it which is another (very good) story. Doc wanted me to wait 8 weeks but I could not take it another day. I rolled my bike out of the garage with my wife, with great trepidation, unsure if I'd be able to do it at all, or make it a mile or whatever. I pulled our truck out of our garage so my wife could come pick me up if I just died along the way because I knew I wanted to at least make an effort. All went well. I might not have been as strong as I was a month ago, but we did 32mi, round trip (on the flats) and that's as good as I could have expected.
Just had to post. This was a huge thing for me. I'm now down to 205 from 285 and hope by the end of July I'll squeak under 200. We'll see.

Congratulations on your recovery and first ride in two months. If you don't squeak under 200 in July you'll always have August.

Ride safe.

Congrats on the come-back. Until my bike exploded yesterday, I was in the process of the same thing. There's nothing sweeter than that first ride after a forced lay off.

Congrats.
I've been off for a month. Afraid to see how much fitness I have lost

IBOHUNT, a friend predicted I would not have lost much conditioning but I was really concerned. He was right. I did get a chance to do some indoor riding on a stationary trainer, but in truth not a lot. Maybe a total of ten times during the 7 weeks. Based on my personal experience I'd guess that one month off might be a huge issue for a serious competitor where small levels of fitness make a huge difference, but for others like myself I could hardly notice a difference. I know I would be far ahead of my condition today if I had been riding the last two months but being off for two months and then knocking out 32mi at good speed (for me) was a huge relief. Most importantly, I was still faster than my wife. I hope your experience is similar when you get back on the bike.

You can retain a lot, believe it or not. I fractured my clavicle last year. I got back on the bike about 1 month later. Did 9 miles of flat riding. I was fine, except for the pain felt on every little pump. Not long after that I did a 46 miles riding a heavy bike on an unpaved trail at a pretty good clip. 23 milles gradually up hill, 23 miles gradually down hill. Again, the only thing that bothered me was the pain left over from the injury.

Three months after the accident (two months after geting back on the bike) I did Cycle Oregon, the third day of which was 88 miles that included a long climb up to and then a ride around Crater Lake in OR. Did I suffer some? Sure. But not nearly as much as I thought I would after being off the bike for a month and easing back into things.

Good recovery. Just don't crash again.
