Anyone use the padded cycling shorts on ebay?

Hi all, I seem to manage well doing my 20-25 miles without padded shorts but when I plan to go further, i'm thinking of trying out some padded shorts. I searched online and on the forum but didn't seem to find any experiences. Does anyone have experience purchasing padded cycling shorts on ebay? If so, how is the sizing? I usually purchasing XXL shorts for when I go to the gym. I'm planning the wear these padded shorts under gym shorts anyways. There are several of these listings on ebay and most of the cheaper ones are from China, so I bet they probably might run small but thought i'd see first if anyone has any experiences.

Here is one of the many ebay listings of the cheap padded cycling shorts on ebay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Unisex-Black...item3f2619ee9b

Any inputs or insights is appreciated, thank you.

I tried a pair of bibs from China a while back. Material was slightly thicker than pantyhose and the pad was stiff. For quality at a decent price, I like the Falconi bibs from https://www.love2pedal.com . Sizing is true and they stand behind their product.

Thanks for the input. Maybe i'll just have to purchase the shorts myself since they seem to go for less than $10 shipped from China but any other experiences would be great as well.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. I've bought some shorts from EBay for about $35 and they were OK. Of course just about any padded shorts will be better than not having padded shorts. I pay many times more than that for Specialized RBS shorts now days. The work for me much better.

Tip: make sure that the shorts aren't baggy on you. The padd will tend to bunch up on you if baggy. Of course mountain bike shorts look baggy; however the pad in them should still be rather snug.

A couple of thoughts for your consideration.

Cycling shorts are the most important item of clothing you will wear while cycling. It's very important that they fit correctly and are comfortable otherwise you won't enjoy riding longer distances.

The quality of the shorts in question is a big question mark. Who really knows how well constructed these are? Also what about the quality of the materials used? How do they fit? You'll find sizing is all over the map. One brands XL is a different brands XXL. Additionally the ones in question appear a lot shorter in length than most cycling shorts. That may or may not appeal to you but it's a consideration.

If you're looking for quality cycling shorts at a good price (and sewn right here in the USA), keep an eye on the outlet at voler.com link: https://voler.com/browse/cat/?cat=Sale

One last thought: Why bother wearing gym shorts over cycling shorts. It's not necessary.

At under $8 for that item on eBay and free shipping, it'd be cool if someone bought it and reviewed it. Maybe even order several sizes if the seller offers that. I ride and commute in regular shorts lots of times, and I do own a couple of sets of Falconi bibs from love2pedal.com also. The bibs work great. But an $8 set of padded cycling underwear that might work underneath regular shorts might be nice to have and if it worked with some loose regular shorts, that'd be a nice option.

Vanity perhaps?

I know how I look when wearing regular bike shorts. One word comes to mind.....awful. That's why I wear baggy mountain bike shorts. All the comfort of regular bike shorts without looking like something a little kid would scream at. Granted, that might not work on a road bike, but for me and my hybrid, it works out great.

+1 Quality and customer service is outstanding. If something doesn't fit - return it. If you need advice before ordering - email them or call them - they reply quickly. Plus shipping is free with an order over $50 and it's made in the U.S.

It's win/win for everybody.

Nashbar is decent for the money. I also have a pair of Pace bike shorts that I bought on sale at a LBS that get the job done.

I bought a pair of Nashbar's Liner Shorts. Being my first pair on bike shorts I have nothing to compare to, but they work out pretty well for my longer rides. As my distances increase I may need to upgrade to something else. Being liner shorts, they are designed to be worn under other shorts. They are a breathable mesh material. The sit seems to run on the smallish side. I wear 2xl in regular shorts and purchased 3xl in these shorts and they are still plenty snug.

I would stay away from the ones advertised with gel. IMO you want foam padding in that area, not gel. I would get shorts that are longer in leg length so you can wear them without gym shorts in the future (at least it gives you the option.) The other problem is sizing, I don't recommend buying shorts online until you've had a chance to try them on first. Of course for $7.58 shipped it's not like it's a big loss if you guess wrong once or twice. BTW, you want bike shorts to fit pretty tight. If you've never owned them they should feel almost uncomfortably tight when you first try them on.

I pay more than $8 for regular, unpadded boxer shorts. Do you really think this product is going to be anything other than cheap Chinese junk? If you want decent shorts at a reasonable price, look at the Falconi Deluxe bibs from Love2Pedal.com. I own a closet full of them. For the price you're not going to find anything better...

the big problem I've found with shorts is how the chamois sits... maybe it's my huge arse... but the seam tends to sit right about under my sit bones... granted my experiance as a big guy is limited to the falconi (not bad for the price though) and some clearance blackbottoms I got from nashbar (great shorts)... next time I get shorts (er bibs) I'll be a bit more picky...

One of the main purposes of the chamois is moisture control, and I imagine gel pads would interfere with that something fierce.

Thanks everyone for your input. And yes I prefer to save people's eyes by wearing gym shorts over padded shorts or padded cycling underwear I was really hoping someone with actual first-hand experience of the item could chime in but I guess i'll get a pair and give it a go. After looking at all the different ebay sellers selling the same thing, it looks like even the XXXL isn't really a true XXL of the US, its more like a small.

it took me a while to get over that (and that was when I was a lean mean teen)... but riding in 90+ degree temps with huge humidity it's just not worth riding with another layer on... yes I look like a dork... yes even I snicker when I see myself in a mirror... but I ride for my own pleasure and not for anyone else.

^^^Thanks, you're right, I shouldn't care what other people think of me. If that stupid teenager in the car honks at me and laughs I can at least say to myself "atleast i'm out here doing something while he's just sitting his car." So it looks like nashbar is having quite some sales on shorts.

Heres what i'm looking at (opinions welcome):
I'm thinking of getting at least a pair or two of these - https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...1#ReviewHeader

And looking at getting multiple of these: https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...0052_169383_-1

Should I just spend the extra $10each and get the DNA Volos or are the Nashbar Liner shorts great for the price? Both seem to get some good reviews. I'm trying to get maybe at 5 pairs total. Any help would be appreciated.

Give it a shot, but I think Garneau runs small. Nashbar is more Clyde friendly.

Absolutely. Function over vanity, I say. Moreover, while I may look like a dork to the outside world, when I put on my biking gear in my mind, I am Lemond, Hinault, or Indurain charging up Alpe D'Huez, or down the Champs-Élysées.

Performance has both baggy and regular stretchy shorts for as low as $30, they have a lot of local stores so you might be able to try them on. I realize, that especially over in the 41, Performance isn't "cool" and then there are hippies that'll try and give you some crap about buying every last thing from the LBS run by that nice aging hippie couple, but it's your money. https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...400065__400065
