Power Tap price reduction.... are they feeling the heat from Stages?
As reported by PhotoJoe and BikeRumor
The G3 has gone from ~1400 to $799, not a sale but a price reduction. Interesting timing with the Stages, crank based, PM getting a big thumbs up from DCRainmaker.com . The Stages is also ~$800. Makes me want a Stages all the more, I suspect the Stages is legit and putting the hurt on PT sales.

From Boyd's FB Page:
Who wants some excellent news? Everybody does, right. We just got word from Power Tap that starting immediately all G3 hubs will now retail for $790! This is a huge price reduction from the previous retail price of $1300.
We have G3 hubs in stock in both 24 and 28hole so we can build up the wheel set immediately. This is great news if you want to get started training with power a lot more economically.

BikeRumor says prices have been reduced, for whatever that's worth.
In truth, this just means that their MSRP now matches what people were paying for PT hubs. When I bought my PowerTap hub, the MSRP was around $1200. My wheel builder charged me $865 for a complete wheel built around that same PT hub and I didn't get any special discount; that was just his everyday price. His prices was below CycleOps minimum advertised price however, so he couldn't display it on his website.

Please tell me where! the cheapest ive seen was in ebay and it was 1000 bucks. All the other ones were 1300. this might be my best bet to train with power. Heard the Stages might not be the best option because it only multiplies the efort of one leg X2 which might not be the real power output. The hub captures the effort of both legs.
At any rate - if your one legged FTP is 250 W but your two legged FTP would only be 240, it still wouldn't affect your training regimen.
I'm intrigued by the temperature correction built into the stages - maybe powertap and SRM/Quarq will have to do something along those lines now.

Anybody have a link to that 800 dollar pricetag!? I am really hoping this is the truth. How does it compare to the 6700 ultegra hub in weight? I bought my wheels to save some weight...

Competitive Cyclist is currently advertising complete wheels from $862, though they characterize that as a "sale" price.
You should be able to google the weight of the new G3 hub pretty easily...

The weight of the G3 hub by itself is 315 grams. It has advantages over the Stages Power meter because it's a full power meter, not half of one. So even if you are pedaling with just your right leg it will register watts.
The Stages does have advantages with weight and flexibility to use different wheels. However it's not going to have consistent reliable results. I have worked with the iBike power meters for a long time and they can do some really cool measurements on their new Newton that you can't get from anywhere else. One of those is a left/right pedal efficiency and balance based on accelerometers (which update as 16 times per second). I did a lot of testing with this and found that when I start an interval I am at 50/50 for pedal balance, but as I get tired I start to favor my right (dominant) leg. So with the Stages the power meter would start off the interval correct and by the end would be reading low. For sprinting, I am left leg dominant so all sprints with the Stages would be reading high. You could set your best wattage but you wouldn't know if it were real or if you just happened to be favoring one leg over another on that particular day, and also just because somebody has good results with the Stages doesn't mean you will.
