MyFitnessPal

My update is, I had to quit using MyFitnessPal. All I have is an old tech and old in today's age (3 years old) prepaid Android phone. I type in the food I want, hit search, and wait, wait, wait. Force stop the app, reload it, search again and it works. Type the next food and wait, wait, wait. Force stop it again. Got tired of it taking 15 minutes and repeatedly typing the same thing to log 3 items in my diary for a meal.
Gained a little bit over Christmas, about 5 lb. Haven't seen it come down any, but haven't been on the bike at any consistency either. I got back onto the app just to verify I was still doing pretty good with the food and it was the same, wait, wait, wait.
This morning I saw a drop of a lb. I have to stand on a scale at work about every hour. It's not accurate as I'm in 4 lb work boots, clothes, and all the stuff in my pockets, but I see it every hour so I see when I'm losing or gaining every day.

So the apps work well for getting balance in a diet too.

I've used MFP for the last 16 months and have now lost about 56 lb. I'm almost at my goal weight, and I've noticed the difference while cycling - especially climbing. The one thing I miss about being heavier is going faster on descents!
As far as calories go: if energy intake is less than energy expenditure, you'll lose weight. But I've found that the composition of my diet has a big effect on satiety and hunger. It's easier to eat at a calorie deficit when I eat nutrient-rich, calorie-poor foods that fill me up and sustain that feeling. In the morning, a slice of whole-grain toast with butter, at 150 calories, keeps me going longer than a bowl of cereal with 1% milk, at 300 calories.

Although I have the app on my phone and do sometimes use it I do most of my tracking on a PC. I have an office job and have a pc in front of me all day. Easy to log breakfast and lunch. I eat dinner in front of my laptop so that works. I use the phone app to sometimes scan bar codes for quick upload.

And playing Wii has to burn more calories and be healthier than just watching TV.
