Meet the offspring of my last 2 steeds - The Dirty Gertie
So I backed into a tree in an unlit wooded driveway at night, dented my wife's CR-Vs hatch, broke out the window and crushed my Schwinn roadie. I damaged my Trek MTB but only the gears got bent, which I replaced the Biopace gears for $30 a pop 
Well I have a century ride a week and a half from today, realizing riding it on a MTB wouldn't be nearly as fun (or comfortable) as I would want. Despite getting money from insurance, we just found out that we have some medical bills that need attention, so no new bike for me....shucks. What is one who like to tinker to do?
Make a road worthy MTB. The vintage section had some drop bar MTB so figured I have drop bar parts, a working MTB, why not see what happens? So the combination of an 82 Schwinn Continental and 91 (early 90's) Trek 800 Antelope and we have....

I know, I know. No one likes snake fangs with the brakes, but I don't have a shorter reach stem so they would have been too far out if the hoods weren't pulled back.
The cockpit - basically the brakes, bar and shifters from my 82 Conti. I probably could use a few inches more on the front brake cable housing but it works well and holds just seems like it might be trying too much.
It might get stripped and powdercoated this winter, otherwise it will be my everything bike until around my birthday where (turning 30) I would like to splurge on something new for the road. But rides like a dream with those big balloon tires! Buzzes like an off-road truck but I am getting new tires today for it.

Looks good, but I would change out those tires before trying to go on a century ride. Amazon/Ebay/Nasbar sells stem adapters for around $15, so you could modify the stem to change the angle if you wanted.

Getting a pair of....hang on refreshing the UPS tracking...HOLY CRAP.....just got a pair of Continental Double Fighter 2's delivered like AS I typed this. You folks are good luck! The tread looked perfect for what I wanted, however a full 26" x 1.90 slick might be something for next year....tehe, blast some full kitted carbon riders would be funnny.

Those look good--but some slicks would have made that Franken-bike a wicked Jeckyll/Hyde machine! LOL!
I have some 1.5x26 slicks mounted on my Hardtail mountain bike and on my commuter--sure love the way they ride...

How do those slicks fit on the rim? I don't want the setup to look goofy with a too small tire on a rim. I am sure it would fit mine, but figured I would ask. And how does it ride with the slicks?

so far I have 1400 miles on them with no flats or any problems

Thanks for the props Bill and Indiana.
I just got it all back together, replaced the 6 speed freewheel that was making noise and missing some teeth with a 7 speed, my LBS fixed the rim no charge and took it for a spin. I need to adjust the seat a tad more but I had plenty of gearing left over. I have a century ride next Sunday so we will how she does!.
