So I started commuting to work today!
I recently started a ned job that a couple of miles from my home. I decided to ride in to work today. So I left early ( 1 hour) and headed in. I got to the shop 55 minutes early. So I chunked my backpack and trunk bak over the fence and enjoyed a 50 minute ride through the nearby community. I believe I will commute every day weather permits. I felt so good after getting my blood flowing before work.

Awesome!

I work from home now, so no commuting... but that's great! Kill two birds with one stone.
I would suggest always leaving yourself time to fix a flat, don't ask me how I figured that out. I got a flat once about a mile from home and was so depressed, I fixed it, went home and drove to work. |
Awesome! I work at Lowe's Home Improvement and recently got permission to park my bike in the bull pen out back. So I will be commuting to work as well if weather permits :)

Pure jealousy here!!! I work about 17 miles from work and go to jobsites from there. Thankfully, I have a boss who hates golf but is a cycling fanatic...we usually cut out and do a "work" ride every two weeks.

As much as the benefits would pay off I don't think I could commute to work by bike, it would become more of a chore instead of a fun ride for fitness, but that's my opinion - if you like it, more power to you! :)
Side note: My former workplace was 25 miles away one way and every route available consisted of nothing but hills. Maybe my next one will be better suited for bike commuting. |
Why is it that I feel great about not riding to work?
I'm working hard at retirement. |
My commute is around 14 miles one way, if I do the full commute. I find one of the benefits of commuting is it forces me to ride, which isn't a bad thing. There are many times I'd like to ride when I get home, but something comes up and prevents me from doing a ride.
I think get more joy out of commuting than my fitness rides. There is a point to the ride and I'm using time that I'd be commuting to ride. It takes me longer to ride to work than commute, but I figure for the extra time it takes is about what a ride would take then I get a free hour to ride which would be my commute time in a car. Remember you don't have to commute the full way to work. You can drive part way and commute from there. It isn't an all or nothing deal. |
Good job, amrmatt!

My commute is 12 miles, one-way, so I ride at least 24 miles when I commute, sometimes more if I take the long way. It's a great way to get miles and honestly it's a lot of fun. Welcome to the club amrmatt! |

I used to split my commute in half - drive the bike in the morning, ride home. Ride back the following morning, drive home. I could see how 50 hilly miles might be more than you'd want to tackle every day. |
Awesome. If I ever have to stop working from home, I would like to arrange this for my that job.

It is a nice way to start the day. For 3 years I rode two miles to the train, took that to another state and then rode 8 miles to the office 3 days/week. Saw a lot of nice sunrises in the fall, winter and spring. Got there very early in the morning so I got to leave the office early to beat the afternoon traffic. While it occasionally felt like a drag, when I started driving it was worse in many ways. Driving to that office was the only time I got into an accident. I was also surprised at how even such a short commute contributed to weight management and fitness.
Now, my ride to work is less than 2 miles. I ride part of the way with the GF, so it's still a nice way to start the day. Now if only there were more bike parking outside my building. |
