bike maintenance woes
 

a short while ago I noticed my rear hub was dragging a bit and spun a little rough, it wasn't super bad but def noticeable vs every other wheelset I've got sitting around... so I ordered one of the few tools I didn't have, a set of cone wrenches...

today I pulled apart the rear hub I find that the drive side isn't exactly locked solid like it should be, so the hub was certainly not adjusted to where it should be, a closer inspection shows the cups (hub) looks nice, the non drive side cone looks good, but that drive side cone has a nice bit of pitting to it...

sadly it seems shops don't bother carrying replacement cones or bearings (called to at least 5 bike shops in the area... one MIGHT have it but they are also downtown (an hr+ drive for me)... I've called my normal shop and am waiting for them to get back with me about price and how long it'll take for them to get it in stock :-/

is what sucks is about 2 or 3 months ago I sold a perfectly good but inexpensive wheelset that would have made this not a problem...

so no real point to this msg other then n+1 needs to hurry up (waiting on one last part for the road bike)... and holding onto spare parts is a good idea doh lol.

on the plus side... once I get the hub back together it should be a lot smoother... and without that drag I should be a bit faster ;-) lol

That is why I am such a pack rat, seems like every time I get rid of something to make a little space I end up needing it within a month or so.

lol I typically am as well... I don't know why I sold that wheelset...

oh well... at least it is something I can have ordered... and it looks like I'm about finished with the road bike, it really needs new hoods but with an afternoon of work I should be able to ride it for now lol.

If it's a name brand (e.g. Shimano) lower-end rear hub, it may be possible to find some parts online. Cones and axles are available for some models. I used to shop at HuskyBicycles.com and get some parts there. Not too expensive and now I carry stock on replacement cones. For us Clydes, it's good to keep parts and tools in stock for wheels. Good luck with finding parts.

I found some online... LBS could get em but they cost 2x as much and would get here slower :-/ so will be here early next week... I'll be out of town this weekend... hope to finish the road bike enough to get a ride in tomm and friday though... we'll see

well I finished getting this guy together so I can ride this weekend :)... it's an oddball set of parts built around an '83 trek 560 frameset... heading out to get it's first real ride (ya know more then up and down the block go get a reasonable baseline fit dialed in lol)

Wow, that looks like a tall frame. You must be a tall clyde, rather than a fat clyde, like me.
Project bikes are fun, but I don't have any room in my new apartment. The last place I lived I worked on bikes in the center of the floor. The carpet was dark so grease stains were not visible.

i'm both... 6'4 and 300+ I tend to do most of the work in what is supposed to be a formal dinning room, we use it as an office for all the family computers... hard wood floors are easy to clean but got to be careful not to drop stuff and ding the wood lol
