As my rear tire was pretty much toast and having had a puncture the previous day, I decided to get the new tire before our ride thru Santiago Canyon set for Saturday 12/14. I removed the CO2 from the tire and repumped it up with my floor pump and headed out to The Unlikely Cyclist. I crossed my fingers that I would have no issues with the tire and that I'd make it to shop w/o issue. And sure enough I made it. Whew!

So got new tire and a new tube to replennish tubes in my seatbag...I keep two in there. Then I rode home on the new tire. Since I track mileage on components and tires I tracked my return ride separately from the ride there.

Plan was to ride Santiago Canyon both ways from Jamboree to Cooks Corner and back. Sure enough the weather reports as Sat grew closer became somewhat worriesome as the forecast was for Santa Ana winds up to 20mph in the canyon at the time we were going to be riding through there. Well...we decided it would be good training for Palm Springs as it can be rather windy there. But final determination on whether we would ride through the canyon would be made when we got to Jamboree and Santiago Cyn.

It was brisk to start the day (46 degrees in Costa Mesa at start) and we anticipated it warming up by time we got to canyon so layers were the order of the day. We are on Mesa just before getting on back bay trail after leaving shop:

So we get to Jamboree after turning off Portola Pkwy and WOW the wind was strong. There is a nice little descent on the way up Jamboree and the wind was really playing havoc with my speed...EEEK. So we get to Santiago and some in group were not all that thrilled with dealing with the wind in the canyon. It was decided we'd start in and if it was bad, we'd turn back. The wind was not nearly as bad or troublesome as it was on Jamboree (at least to me) as we made our way to Cooks Corner.

Here we are waiting for rest of group to arrive off Jamboree and decide to go ahead...

And the view heading towards Cooks after we decided to go forward with the ride:

    Further into canyon:

The great thing about riding a bike sometimes is you never know what you will see on the way. And our ride through Santiago Canyon was no exception. We came across a "free poultry show" sign. Hmmmm....my teammate who I was riding with at the time and I joked about how they needed a better sign to get a crowd...and lo and behold...they HAD a crowd!!! There was a "COCK SHOW" happening!!! We had to stop and get a picture:

Assuming the losers become poultry...and dinner.

Made it to Cooks Corner w/o any real problems related to wind. Was getting warm so I decided to remove my arm warmers and knee warmers. I moved my shorts leg up to get my knee warmers off and this older biker dude commented about showing a lot of thigh and getting the men excited. Ha ha ha. After I was done removing the extra items, he later wandered by again and was flirting with me I guess as he handed me a card for a social network for bikers and non bikers. LOL

I had heard that there is the Hard way and the Easy way through Santiago Canyon (hard way is Jamboree to Cooks and easy way is the reverse). My only previous experience on Santiago Canyon was the Ride 2 Recovery in August and I had burned my matches early on that ride keeping up with my faster teammates and my legs were TOAST by the time we got to Santiago Canyon and we were going the easy way so I didn't exactly feel it was all that easy but didn't have the opposite direction experience to compare it to.

Today was the day to compare! Indeed coming back from Cooks to Jamboree is easier and enjoyed it very much. The only scary part was when we got back closer to Jamboree and the toll road area. The gusts of wind were strong here and watching speed and concentrating on controlling bike was needed. But we all made it back to the Chevron at Jamboree in one piece and that is always a good thing!

And because it was earned...and I recalled how awesome the popsicle at Cool Breeze tasted I decided an ice cream bar was in order at the Chevron where we regrouped, got water etc and use the restroom...

    Here is my ride data:
    http://www.strava.com/activities/100334712

Tho oddly my mileage is less than pretty much everyone elses. I use a speed sensor (duotrap) and not GPS and usually is pretty spot on compared to others when we ride so not sure why the difference this ride. Others had 61 miles and I was just under 60.

Recovery ride and doing a bit of banking.

Power meter battery died on way to bank so after I did my banking I put a new battery in the power meter.

Headed toward Rivers End and love how this picture turned out. It isn't nearly as gloomy out as this appears but it is cool:

Decided to head over to the Seal Beach pier to add a teeny bit of distance to my ride:

Me on ride yesterday - Sat 12/21

We rode along PCH to Seal Beach.

    http://http://www.strava.com/activities/101311943

Was chilly out and I wore my new thermal tights for first time. I have been sick since last Sunday night (12/15). So yesterday was first ride since my recovery ride. My goal of 4000 miles for the year has taken a bit of a hit. As I didn't want to make my cold worse than it needs to be, I made sure to bundle up yesterday. Thus the bandana it keeps me from breathing cold air into my lungs as doing that results in coughing post ride (which I did for hours after the ride thru Santiago Cyn the previous Sat).

We started out with 21 riders at shop. Picked up 3 along PCH at SART. Another caught up to us on PCH between Seapoint and Warner as we headed toward Seal Beach as we stopped due to a flat tire. We are now up to 25 riders. In Seal Beach we picked up our last add on rider to bring our group to 26!

We headed back south and the wind was strong in our face and I was struggling out front with pace. Being sick for a week and no riding left me with little in my legs or lungs. As we approached Seapoint we approached two slower riders riding side by side. I thought I checked traffic to get around them but guess I misjudged speed...as I moved to traffic side of white line (just enough to pass so barely on that side) a big truck went by me. It was closer than I prefer and I blame myself for not being patient and waiting to pass and think my brain was still not functioning 100% as normally I would never put myself so close to danger and PCH is no place to tempt fate. I didn't get scared or startled by the passing truck itself so not sure it was a super close call...but the team mate close to me was scared for me so in her eyes it was very close. Glad I didn't become a statistic. The vehicle didn't honk so not sure how close they felt it was...if they even noticed. Either way, I'm glad my error in judgment was not fatal.

As we headed back to shop we had another flat due to a staple in a tire not too far from where we were exiting PCH to go up Dover. We stopped long enough to not only fix the flat but to allow the couple of slower riders and our sweep to catch the group.

We got back to shop and enjoyed home made treats baked by Vntgdrms (Lisa). I also hung out and Michele her wrench wench put these on my bike:

Next up Rapha Festive 500 (311+ miles) and GMR between tomorrow and 12/31!

Nice hardware for the bike. If you ever want to upgrade the pads. The swiss stop purple pads are the $hit. $30 for the pair so a few bucks cheaper the getting a dura ace set.

Well, I signed the family up for TdPS. As expected, hotel prices are SKY HIGH so I coughed up most of my remaining Hilton points. I'm looking forward to that AND the festive 500 starting tomorrow. If I remember to fix my flat front tire today that is.

Love this thread! And wish I lived closer (600 miles away!) I am visiting in SoCal now but still 2 counties away and no bike, otherwise I would try to join you ladies. Next time we come down I will attempt to make it to that shop. What type of Garmin computer do you use?

Got our team kits last week.

Four of us rode in the new kit to meet the Strava Gran Fondo Jan challenge

The guy in the pic is the lady on the rights fiance. He rode the Gran Fondo on a single speed and not in bike shorts...and thus no chamois. Kudos to Rob.

So how many of you are registered for TDPS and will you deign to say "hi" to us non-chicks at the start? What's your time goal for this year?

I'll planning be there again this year. Don't know if I'll be on the tandem or the single, or when and where I'll be. I'll be with a friend who will be on his tandem but at this point I don't have a stoker (unless someone is interested). My friend will have his significant other on the back of his so I think they will probably want to just do the 50 miler. We're going to just be cruising.
It doesn't get harder, you just go slower.

    Ay carumba!

You recall they prevented us from leaving before 7 last year... the so-called "fast teams" left at 6 (I think) and we got stuffed until 7.

I'll keep an eye out for you guys.

Hm, different route this year with a tiny bit more upfront "climbing"

    http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3855848

No little cat four on the tail end this year either. Just 50 miles of false flat.
