But this cold is to much for me. I had high and lofty dreams of doing 200 miles a month this winter...ain't happening. Asking for a trainer for Christmas I think...

Get a trainer, use this video, hate me later for it. I have been doing it since I broke my hand and can't ride on the road, and since it is too dang cold I am not running outside.

Oh yeah...

I was nearly cold proof.

But then I got the gout.

I am missing commuting (just 1 day a week) so very much, but working on getting geared up for the cold... almost there.

Spent far more than I'd like. Gonna take a whack at it first full week of the new year.

Did you get the trainer?

I don't know the climate you're in, but I hate the cold. Talked to all the other riders in my group, as well as the LBS guy, and found out what they are wearing. LAYERS and layers and layers. I've tried different things and have found a happy medium. It's usually in the low to mid 30's at the start of the ride and warms up to 40's or 50's several hours in, but I'm able to stay warm, so check with your LBS and riders and see if they are riding and what they are wearing. You may be able to do something. I get really bored on the trainer, so usually am only able to put in an hour, which seems like 3. A three hour+ ride seems shorter.

Did you have any negative reactions to allipurinol?

Other than the immediate denial reaction of not wanting to be on maintenance meds before I turn 40, I had no negative reactions at all.

Oh this is good.

I had a bear of a time getting the right BP med. One crushed my workload capability, one made me profoundly morose (but helped my riding), one killed my strength. This last one actually helps a little and is otherwise unnoticeable.

A statin crushed my max lifts at the gym in like 2 weeks. I didn't believe it for 2. Took a couple months to get the max back.

Will get prescription next at Dr visit (week or so)... Couldn't come at a better time as I need to start building miles for a 200k brevet attempt in April. Gout is killed my cold tolerance.

I'm not intimidated by the mileage, but the 6800 feet of climb as I'm a Pachy... around 260lbs...

I don't know how bad you get gout, But the best way I can descibe the pain in my outbreaks is it feels like some one heated a 200lb anvil to bright orange and dropped it on my big toe joint from about 5 ft I can't funtion at anything .
I had a BP. med kill my strength too also some bp meds can agravate gout ask your doc

The gout presents rather atypically. It gets sore to sharp pain in places where I have a lot of scar tissue or old broken bones. Hands and feet mostly but also between the shoulder blades on my back. Rarely is it sharp and concentrated in the toe knuckles like most people.

Blessing and curse: Curse in that whole foot can hurt pretty bad, but blessing as the intensity is nothing like when it is concentrated as it is in most people. When it is concentrated I can't imagine how people where it presents normally get on with life...

THX! I'll look up the BP med and gout... But, I'm running out of options regulating BP...

Looks like losartan might be an option. weak as a hypertensive, but increases the elimination of uric acid. Life rarely gives you a two-fer!

Riding indoors is a bear --- I much prefer rowing for a quick and harsh indoor workout -- but I consider myself a cyclist , so I gotta do what I gotta do ----------- I've used these spin bikes at several locations and was comfortable with them and their adjustability (now its adjusted where I can read a magazine -- LOL ) -- its a little different kind of resistance and takes some getting used to, but I will typically find an action movie or something funny on Netflix, -- then do 35-40 minutes of LSD type spinning on this bike, -- then jump off and do 20 minutes on the rowing machine to cap it off

--- I feel destroyed afterwards --

The spin bike cost me $175 at a retailer that refurbished old gym equipment and buys stuff from YMCA's , etc. --- its advantage over a trainer for me is its ultra quiet, super stable (it weighs 150 pounds) -- ergos aren't the same as my real bikes, but I try to get in a mountain bike ride as often as I can

-- just a thought

Its a Rubbermaid rail system I got from Home Depot --- this is a spare room and I wanted to tidy it up a bit and make it my "bike room" of sorts ----
The pic with the track bike is the closest pic I have , but you probably get the idea

The racks are just sheetmetal strips with some kind of plastic covering and sort of tongue and groove system for hanging attachments --- and Home Depot has bike hangers, general purpose hangers and all kinds of attachments -- I keep a couple of pairs of bibs hanging on there because they hang funny in the closet ,
--- admittedly, if I were any type of wood worker in the least , I could have made something similar and saved a few bucks, but these really helped me tidy the place up a bit --- trying to find more boxes of laminate wood flooring to finish the space out though

Thanks, I actually have some of the tracks that those fit in in my garage, just don't have anything on them to hang bikes. I just couldn't see that angle from the other pictures. I need to hang them from the floor joists in my basement as there isn't a good location on a wall, so I'll likely have to stick with what I have planned.
