No, plastic spokes would be highly unusual, and outside of Spinergy PBO spokes, I can't think of anything that would be similar at all. Well, Madfiber had carbon fiber spokes, but those were pretty rare and expensive.

Well, it seems like the OP has enquired and purchased in quick order.

But, for future reference, I'm another proponent of traditional 32 or 36 spoke wheels for those in excess of 240lbs or so.

My current primary wheels are a set of 32h DT Swiss 585s laced 3X with 14/15 DB spokes to Ultegra hubs that I built myself about two years ago. So far, they haven't suffered any issues. Since building them I've performed two annual services on them, where I've simply checked tension balance and made a few very minor tweeks without needing to worry about true in any way.

Just last week I was stopped on the side of a road with a group ride and one of the other bigger guys in the group looked at my wheels and commented something to the effect of, "Those have got to be one of, if not the, strongest wheels in the world."

I really don't see any advantage to reduced spoke count training wheels for us big guys. Any aerodynamic savings is absolutely dwarfed by our weight, road resistance, rider wind resistance and the shortened service life.
