Oops, you're right. I just remember all those skinny, seasoned pros literally falling sideways off their bike at the top. Of course, it was 115 degrees and that was the end of a hard 100 miles or so but still.
We went to the finish and standing there was hotter than hades...watching those poor guys struggle up was painful

Yeah, me too... uh, yeah, obligations at home and, uh, well, my cardiovascular well being.... lol! I'd like to ride to the village at some point soon, but I think a few more rides to the shack are in order--and I am going to look into a 29-rear tooth cog; that 26t just wasn't cutting it for me.

I think I was in my 25 tooth cog the whole way up.

Getting to the village from the shack is much easier than getting to the shack. It's just around that next bend. But it really is easier - you have one 3 mile climb that's very similar to the shack climb and the rest is rolling, no biggie.

Just don't ask PhotoJoe.

Agreed that getting to the village is not as "difficult" as getting to the shack. Tho that climb out of the village sucks but it isn't horribly long.
@Erwin8r - seriously...you were on a 26? Much props to you! I have a 30 and at times wish I had my SRAM Apex drivetrain with the 32 on it for rides like this. Sadly that drivetrain needs a bike.

Uh-huh!

OK, now that I've recovered somewhat, let me clarify that the village is not that big of a deal. It's just not a great idea if you don't have some miles in your legs. I'm out of shape and it kicked my butt. I lived to tell, but that mountain definitely showed me who was boss. I don't want to scare people off - just be smart(er than I was!).

You guys can solve all your problems like I did just by coming over to the Dark Side and using a Quad with an 11X32. Forget the Triple

I could totally do both the lifts and the tram if I had a SS with the same gears that guy had......but I'd have to reverse them front to back.

On a coo.ld windy day when I'd rather sit on the couch, seeing the pics and reading about your ride is inspiring me to ride when I didn't really want to.

Thank you!

I love the duct tape retention system on those Diadoras.

Hey, chainlove has Sidi Drakos on "sale" for $300 today.

Yah, so let's play this out. I got home from the ride to the Great Nuclear Winter of 2014. Then I would have to have the following conversation: "Daughter, I know I can't afford to send you to the college you want to go to next semester, but look at these awesome shoes I got. TrojanHorse tipped me off to a great deal. I know my classic shoes work just fine, but these were only $300!!! Sorry about your future, but they look sooo cool. Oh, yah, and I had to buy new pedals to go with the shoes. Only another $250. Hey, I cut corners. They're only Speedplays!"

Yah, no thanks. I'll use my classic Diadore's!
