VeloViewer Score

Your VeloViewer score is a way to compare yourself against your peers. It is the average segment position score from your top 25% (max 100) of non-downhill segment.
More detail:
  • Position score - Each of your completed segments comes with a score, between 0 and 100, that represents your relative position based on the number of other athletes that have also ridden the segment. The higher the score the better!
  • Why not use placing? - Being 1st of 2 athletes isn't the same value as being 1st of 1,000. Equally being last of 2 athletes isn't anywhere near as bad as last of 1,000. The position score reflects how you stack up against others much better than your actual placing.
  • 25% - Only your top 25% of scores (to a maximum of 100) are taken into consideration as I'm guessing you haven't visited the pain cave for the majority of your segments so we only want to include those where you have.
  • But we've got local pro's taking the top spots - Seeing as the score isn't based on actual positions then this should well balance out as if the area is good enough for lots of pro's to ride there, chances are there are a lot more non-pro riders too so giving the potential for higher relative scores.
  • But I'm an awesome downhiller! - I feel your pain but to comply with STRAVA API usage rules, flat or uphill only.
Good ways to improve your score could be:
  • Go for segments you've not ridden before to get your worse scores out of your top 25%.
  • Check out your segments where you score below you VeloViewer score but still within the top 25% and try and improve your placing.
  • Ride segments that have a higher number of athletes as the potential for a higher score is better, but then so is the potential for a lower score.
  • Get fitter!
Thanks for the reply; I did read the VV help page you posted, but I'm not so crispy on following the math!

Similarly, while I understand the instruction on how to improve one's score, I can't understand how their weighted, and whether someone who wants to improve their score should rather focus on riding new segments or raising their ranking on existing segments. On top of that, ranking is weighted based on the number of athletes on a segment, so I wonder is it better to be first place on a 50 person segment, or 88th on a 600 person segment?

I just don't do math very well!

first out of 50 is 98%

88th out of 600 is 85%

I think their guidance is to find a segment where your performance is pretty slow that you know you can do better and then go do it.

I don't know how "downhill" a segment has to be to be excluded though.

That last just makes me work harder! Plus trying to find new segments.

I hate the stars. Dammit. It just shows how little I am doing.

OTOH, my score crept up a fraction.

make your own and give them good names too!! It will auto dump other rider's data on the segment within a day.

All the segments around me seem to have 6,000 riders on them so it's hard.

That just seems like cheating. Plus there's a boatload of segments on my usual ride anyway, and they overlap.

I just need to ride more and different places. Or learn to climb up to Oak Flats fast enough to get into the top 100.

My brother and some friends of ours back home regularly ride around Richmond Park. It appears that in 15 miles they have more segments than I'll clock in 50-60.

I noticed that, you have 10 times as many segments Velo Viewer is pulling data from than me on the west side of LA.

I blame the tri geeks for measuring out every .36799091 miles of the coastline AND every 10ft vertical rise/bump..."oh a 20ft hill after a downhill, lets put 3 segments on it" then have someone do the same thing. Now you have 8-9k people within a 30sec segment

OK so I swim in the shallow end of the pool. I went out today on my 25 miler with the sole intention of busting one of my friends segments. Strava is such a great motivator for simple mined folks like me.
