For those of you just tuning in, I'm a 280lb/127kg out-of-shape clyde here in the Great Northwest. Last year, I bought a new bike (a Motobecane Fantom CXX from BikesDirect - go here
for my unboxing/assembly report). Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, I took a job that required me to be available 24/7/365 so I didn't have any time to ride, hell, I was just struggling to keep up my wake/sleep schedule. Still, even though I was eating most of my meals from vending machines and fast "food" restaurants, I didn't gain back much of the weight I did manage to lose. Fortunately, I was let go from that job about a month ago (I hated it with a passion) and the weather has started to improve here. To put it another way, it's Go Time!
Did my first ride of 2014 last Thursday, 11.9km. My Garmin said my average heart rate was 156bpm and my average speed (don't laugh) was 16.9km/h. I did make a couple of short stops to let the heart rate drop back into the training range, but other than that I spun the whole way. Last Tuesday, I did 16.11km with an average speed of 19.5km/h and an average heart rate of 144bpm, much more acceptable and I felt like I could have gone a lot longer. Also, I wasn't sore at all the next morning. But the most dramatic thing I noticed? How much my mood improves after I ride - I feel ready to take on the world, after a nice hot bath of course. I can now see how people can get addicted to fitness and need to keep on it to feel normal, but hey, there are worse addictions, eh? Tomorrow I'm going to go out and take a whack at 25k and see what happens. As I always do, I'll take lots of water (2x800mL Klean Kanteens) and Shot Bloks to stave off the bonk.
Last year, even though I only rode regularly from April to July, I still managed to lose 25lbs and four inches off of my waistline, which moved me to Grade II obesity from Grade III. I will never forget my doctor's wide-eyed look of sheer astonishment when he looked at the marks on the inside of my belt.
My goal for this month is to do 200k which will put me on track to accumulate 1,600km by October 31, to be donating my fat clothes once and for all and for me to be able to shop for European-style athletic cut suits (Strellson anyone?) No more Casual Male XL for me!
Any thoughts on training/nutrition/anything would be greatly appreciated.
