April riding log - who's up for a challenge?

Quick ride for me today. Fiddled with the bike yesterday, replaced the cassette and chain and gave it a general clean and lube. Ride today determined that the gears needed adjustment. I fiddled with them for a while but with a big ride at the weekend I decided I'd rather know they were good so let the LBS do it for me.

01 Apr - 14 miles

MTD - 14 miles

Got over 220 miles in March. Fifty of those on my new Trek Domane and feels like I am riding a rocket .....now weather is back down in the 20's. Looks like it will be back to the gym for about a week.

I'm up for a challenge. I finished March with 559 miles and did not even ride a century. I plan to change that this month to include a century. Could this be the month I go over 700 miles?

ah... I'd forgotten it's a new month... perfect timing... i'm in

I haven't done any real riding for a while but have a pretty big tour ride in may and have been slacking on saddle time... so I'm going to say 250 miles

4/1 - 30 miles - slow, perfect weather but 8-15mph winds suck lol... and I have officially named the touring bike... "Big Bertha"... when I go to pick her up right after my road bike she weighs a TON... but she sure rides smooth

MTD - 30
MTG - 220

who's up for a challenge?
I'm going to give it a go. Haven't been on a bike since mid-December, so any significant mileage will certainly be a challenge. LOL.

Anyway, I'm gonna shoot for 150 miles. Not much, but I finally got a lingering hip injury cleared up and I don't want to have to (ever) go through that again, so I'm going to go easy for the first month.

Okay, so having said that, today's mileage was.....

April 01 = 3.53 very windy miles. Almost tossed my lunch. How can you almost toss your lunch on just 3.53 miles??? Grrrrrr.

MTD = 3.53 miles.

Got my 13 year old daughter out there riding tonight on my regular rails to trails. Plan was to ride through the tunnel and was surprised it was not passible. It was completely filled with ice. When I say completely filled, I mean completely filled. Mounds of ice was 4 to 5 feet high from wall to wall from the water leaking through the ceiling.

So I'm starting off April with an 11.2 mile flat ride on the bike trail. It was pretty slow going with her tagging along but worth it with hopes she rides with me on a regular basis. Average speed was just a mere 8.7 mph on the flat trail with cruising about 10 mph. She did pretty good with just a few stops for break.

Tomorrow will be the same ride but by myself as well as toting the camera with me t get pictures of the tunnel ice. I also need to do a comparison riding the new Giant Escape vs what I did last year on the Walmart bike. I also still need a picture of the bike for the hybrid picture thread in that subforum. Tried tonight but my phone camera is horrid.

Oh, guess I should put a goal out there. I really thought I could hit 100 miles but then never got the weather for it. Have the weather now so I'll put my goal to 200 miles.

.

I'm in! Did my usual 9.1 miles home from work this morning, if I just do the minimal commuting I usually do I should rack up 225 miles this month, but I want to get in at least a few long rides on the way home and a few rides on my days off. I think I'll shoot for 275 miles this month. I've been doing pretty good adding some extra miles (2 to 30 depending) to my ride home from work occasionally, it's getting in rides on my days off that is the hard part.

4/1 9.1 miles

Shooting for 250 miles again this month ... was 7 miles short last month. Ideally a mix of indoor and outdoor. Really want to start commuting again but I don't do cold cold ... somewhat cold, sure. But low 30s? no way

I finally got to ride for the 1st time on Saturday, had alot of mud on me but felt great! I know it doesnt count but I got 9 miles in. For April 1st I got a measly 5 miles. Tried to wait for traffic to slow down, but cooled off quick in Central NH, plus the pot holes. Going to try for 200.

I haven't done a 100 mile month in quite a while, so that will be my goal this month. I will need to start there (at least) to ride my goal for the year of 1,000+ miles, especially since I only ride in fair weather.

I drove to a rail trail yesterday with my hybrid, and was targeting 5-10 miles. The rail trail I picked was at a higher elevation than where I live and work... When I got there, I realized that target probably wasn't going to happen, so I decided to just do what I could. The parts that were clear of snow were muddy, and my bike was sinking in pretty well, even with 40mm tires. I was working hard.

I ended up riding just over 1 mile round trip, and worked harder than I was expecting to for 5-10 miles. Can I get a ruling on a conversion factor?

04/01 - 1.08 mile (Yes, I am taking credit for the .08)

MTD - 1.08 mile

Distance to Go (monthly) - 98.92 miles

YTD - 12.54 miles

Distance to Go (yearly) - 987.46 miles

Bet you don't have as much of a problem on the rail trail as I do. I'm totally limited to 5.5 miles out and turn around now because of the inside of the tunnel.....

That's a tough one to ride through. That's all ice. Looks like I'll be riding just 11 miles total when I go to the trail for quite some time, LOL. I was hoping to do more then last year's 12 miles in an hour daily with the new bike.

That is awesome looking. I'm assuming you didn't use a cheap point and shoot for that... what did you use?

Sorry, I should have noted, not my shot. I arrive from the other side and can't walk through to that point of view. That is also a processing called HDR (high dynamic range where you combine several exposures) which I am not good with. This image is from a Franklin, PA facebook page.

I rode back to there again today with my camera and tried to get some flash shots. I couldn't seem to get the flash working at all. Note to self, when combining cycling hobby with photography hobby, make sure when bringing camera up to the eye, remember that the new Take-a-Look mirror mounted on the helmet perfectly covers the flash, LOL.

The columns of ice rising up on the sides to the ceiling were there yesterday. Today they were gone. I was surprised to see how much has melted in just 1 day. Its about 1/4 melted already from what I saw yesterday. I fear the tunnel getting closed though because there was a lot of chunks from the ceiling that came down. One section sitting in the middle of the trail is about 3 foot in diameter Would hate to have something like that crash down while riding through.

Raced in my first ever MTB race tonight. Two dozen oldsters in my class. Slow start but gained position as the race went on. Finished 5th and had way too much fun in the mud. The improvements in cardio conditioning from all the mind numbing commuting base miles last few months are paying off. Looking forward to next weeks race.

Put 10 miles on the odometer to start the month.
