#%$& yeah ! ! !

Completed my first 5 miles in a single sitting... day before I did 3 in the morning and four in the afternoon but Yesterday was the first day I did 5 miles in a single ride. Spinning nearly all the way (instead of mashing and coasting). Taking a day off the bike today to let legs recoup and gonna try for 6 tomorrow !

Congratulations!

I remember my first adult five mile ride! It really wasn't that long ago in real terms. In 2010 I was having foot problems (gout). I had retired and gained weight.... I was miserable. I took up cycling in hopes of just getting outside and taking in fresh air. My 1st rides were to a coffee shop less than a mile from home. At first my legs were so weak when I arrived I would be too shaky to walk inside.

Cycling has changed my life! And it will yours too... if you give it a chance. Now I am healthy and fit with tons of energy. I cycle most chances I get (more than a couple thousand miles a year)... and I enjoy every single ride I take.

Keep up the great effort!

Congratulations!

It is fun to hit milestones! And I am glad to hear that resting is part of your mix, it will make sure that future milestones keep coming.

Thanks guys! making some of the recommended adjustments in seat angle and height helped dramatically. I can't wait to get on the bike tomorrow and see how far I can go.

p.s. I'm also on day 3 of no cigarettes.

Congrats on quitting smoking and reaching milestones on the bike! Forget the mileage and just pick a destination and just ride to it next time. You'll be surprised just how many miles you can ride when you don't even realize it

To add to the mileage comments mentioned above.

When I started, it took a while to get up to more than 4 or 5 miles comfortably, but it seemed to increase quickly after that. While the miles per ride are important emotionally as milestones, don't get upset if the numbers plateau sometimes, and do just ignore them at times and do destinations rather than miles. Depending on the day, there will be times when you won't ride as far as you expect/hope, maybe not even doing as well as you did on past rides, but barring injury recovery time (if you ever need it), every mile on a bike is movement in the right direction.

Found a friend that rides here as well... had an idea the other night. We are both going to pick three clubs... only three clubs put em on our back and ride out (8.2 miles one way) to a little golf course here and walk it playing with only three clubs ( have a rucksack that should allow me to put em on my back) and then ride back. Hope to be able to make it in a month. Thats the next BIG goal for me.

That is a great idea and congrats. If you stay with it you will be amazed at how you increase distances. I started in Dec riding 1.5 miles and gradually increased through the rest of winter as I could depending on weather. I now routinely ride 10-15 miles and once a week do 25 or so.

Also congrats on quitting smoking.......sometimes it is good to be a quitter!!

I don't golf, but I immediately thought that this would be a job for PVC tubing, if you plan to do it frequently... I did a quick search, and didn't find any plans or instructions for golf club holders on a bike, but did see at least one that allows a rider to carry a couple of fishing poles... seems like similar design considerations apply. Either 3 small diameter tubes, or one huge one.

PVC tubing probable came to mind because I recently ran across something in my basement, a contraption made of PVC tubing that had some sort of quick release mount on it that looks like it should have been on a handlebar. I have no recollection of making it, and can't figure out what I made it for, but it has my mind racing.

congrats. keep excited. Also realy good to note that the 5 mile ride was spinning vs mashing......... your knees will thank you for keeping the gear lower and cadence higher.

I did 5 miles on my second ride after going more than 20 years without riding. (My first was 2 miles.) The worst part about it was a little old lady on a comfort bike passed me on the trail . I took a few years but I now do 30 miles on a regular basis and I did 80 one day last year.

That is to say keep up the good work!

Congrats on the milestone! Congrats on quitting smoking. Free your mind and set your guns free; you'll be adding distance without much notice soon.

Good job! Next ride will be 6, then 8, then 10, then there'll be no stopping you!

Thank you everybody for taking a second guys... The ongoing conversation here keeps me motivated. My wife was laughing at me because I rode the bike to the end of the road to get the mail.... lol. I keep walking by it and have to remind myself that im taking a day off to recoup. On a side note my 3 yr. Old daughter got a big girl bike a couple months ago and has refused to get on it saying she likes her tricycle better. Today she walked up to me and asked if we could get her big girl bike out of the barn because she wanted to ride with daddy... really looking forward to the day when we can ride around the neighborhood together !
