Do I need to quote your thread title to you? You said forget what works for most folks and blame a specific brand of soft drink. I read all kinds of things, like your responses that does not mean I agree with what I read. I get that you think an opinion piece in the NYTimes that cites a few studies and one article is valid research upon which to make conclusions about weight gain and loss. Does not mean you are correct. Look at the content of the lower calorie diets that was suggusted to lead to weight gain, high glycemic index carb diet. But nowhere in the opinion do I read the conclusion you reach with your title supported. The closest seems to be that they think counting calories is less important than addressing the biological desire to overeat.

I have to be honest. I changed my lifestyle and now I eat whatever I want. The hard part was changing my mindset to make it want to eat healthy food. Once my mindset was changed it is a walk in the part to stay where I am. My diet was low fat, it did work. I did have 4 portions of fat a day including an obligatory FLax seed serving every single morning. The rest from nuts, dark chocolate and fish. I love nuts and guzzle down on them. They give me energy. I told my fiancee once I was low on energy and she told me it was because i lacked nuts... then the story changed.

I went from 230#s @ 28% fat to 161#s @ 5% body fat with the provided diet. I love it and whenever I "have to" eat a hamburger I get nauseous since I changed my mindset to think that lettuce and chicken tastes great therefore my tongue dislikes high fat and too many carbs. I threw all artificial sugar out the window and sodas, replaced with brown sugar if anything.

Link below of my progress from 182 to 161. Those are the tough 20#s.

It has been shown definitively that we release insulin when we taste calorie free sweeteners. The response is different from sugars, but still there.

Stopped drinking sodas a couple of years ago but occassionally have a soda, maybe once or twice a month and neither time do I finish the cup or bottle. Case in point got a Subway combo last night. Knowing what I know about diet drinks opted for the Cherry Coke. Took two swigs and threw the rest away. NOW if I can just lower my milk intake...LOVE MILK!!
