Need a economical but quality bike repair stand

Now that I've ridden my bike a few it's time for some maintenance. Need a stand that's portable and decent quality to perform bike maintenance. Any suggestions?

Keep an eye out on Craigslist. I just picked up a Park Tool PCS-10 in practically brand new condition. Repair stands go quick if the price is good so be ready to jump on it immediately. I've seen good stands go for $50.

Love my Feedback Sports Sport-Mechanic stand. It's not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive. I do a bit of bike flipping, so the stand sees quite a bit of use, almost every evening and weekend, and I haven't had an issue with it yet. You can find it on sale for a decent price at places like REI, and I do believe you can get it on Amazon as well.

I spent WAY TOO MUCH time obsessing over which stand to buy. I was torn between the Park PCS-10 and the Spin Doctor Pro G3. (I knew I was going to buy it from Performance since that is my LBS of choice.) I had decided to buy the Park based on how much respect they get for all their goodies. The mechanic at the store talked me out of it. He said he had the PCS10 in the shop and wishes he could get rid of it. He said, in his opinion, the Spin Doctor was a better stand and was cheaper. It was on sale then so I bought it. (Performance has them on sale all the time for around $159.)

Maybe I don't know what I missed out on by rejecting the Park, but I am really happy with the G3. It is quick to set up and compacts down enough that I can stash it in a corner behind a door that stays open all the time. It's sturdy and does what it should. One of the selling points I was interested in was the little box/tray thingy where you can put your parts after you take them off--turns out it is pretty much a non-factor. I don't think I have ever used it.

Honestly, either stand will probably meet your needs. As infrequently as I actually NEED the stand, I'm sure I put in more hours doing obsessive research than I have actually using the stand.

I just bought a Bikehand Cycle Pro Mechanic Bike Repair Stand off Amazon last night for $90. It has many positive reviews on Amazon. I would post a link, but Amazon is blocked on my work computer. I was going to go with either the Park or a Feedback but could not justify the added expense at this time. I should have it tomorrow and I let you know if I like it or not. I have 7 bikes at my house so it should get a fair amount of use.

This is exactly what I did! I bought through REI. Between sales, coupons, and dividends the price ended up being quite reasonable. I've used several of the Park Tool stands and the only one that really compares to the Feedback Sports stand is the PCS-4. The PCS-4 has a better clamp than the Sport-Mechanic stand, but sells for considerably more.

I bought something like a Spin Doctor G3 and it works fine for home repair. No complaints here. It probably ran me about $150-$160. I've had it for a few years and it's held up.

I have now had my Bikehand Repair Stand for about a week. Overall, I am very pleased with it performance considering the low $90 price. The clamp could definitely be easier to use, but I don't seem to have much problem getting even my heaviest bike locked in it. I am also quite happy about how small it folds up.

Here is a pic of it holding up my Stumpjumper FSR when I was converting it to a tubeless setup.

Park Tool PCS-9 Home Mechanic Repair Stand - Modern Bike

Bakerb24 06-22-14 05:23 PM

My wife bought me the Park PCS-10 for Christmas this year and I like it a lot. I've got a bunch of the goodies to go with it and they are also nice. I like the tray the best, and also have the paper towel holder. I don't think that I would recommend those unless you have a place for your stand which will allow it to be set up permanently. Overall, it's a great piece. Now if my mechanic-ing skills were better I'd be in business.

irwin7638 06-22-14 05:54 PM

I have a couple of hooks hanging from my garage rafters. The drivetrain is right at eye level, it works fine.
