A quick follow up from my OP.

This morning I tackled the same hill again and added a few more miles. Total distance was 11.7 miles in 1 hour even. Total elevation gain was 1,050" with 575' of that being the big climb. Planned my gearing better, no problems at all. It was a lot of fun. For the first time my butt bones were a bit tender toward the end of the ride.
