Just FYI I can't ride this year... I have cataract surgery scheduled July 23 and August 4 (discussed in the 50+ forum)... can't wait - I haven't been able to see anything clearly for about 3 years now... Hopefully can join folks next year but for sure I will be doing my cheater ride... I ain't got nothing to prove anymore (the advantages of age!)!

Well, I had to try! Congrats on the surgery and recoup fast. We'll plan on seeing you on the 2015 ride!

If PJ says you're in, you're in. The regular century is slightly more challenging than palm springs, and only because "the hill" is longer. No nasty headwinds & no 32 degrees at the start either.

Ride responsibly. K-rail section along freeway is very narrow in places. Make sure you stop at La Conchita Entrance as car are exiting freeway at high speed.
As of the 4th of July weekend the new bike path, on the ocean side of the freeway, was not finished. That means two-way bike traffic behind k-rails on the hill side of the 101 freeway.

The warning about the path being very narrow at points is very true. Also, the warning about STOPPING at the La Conchita "off ramp" is very true. There is a gap for La Conchita and that gap is the freeway's offramp for northbound traffic going into La Conchita. While traveling northbound on the path a cyclist ahead of me did not stop (at the clearly marked stop) was nearly nailed by a car exiting the freeway. Could have been a very nasty accident. So please STOP!

BTW, yes I am doing the ride.

Hilly or regular style? How's your ticker doing?

Speaking of, @tunavic has apparently living the life of a hedonist but he said he'd do the hilly century with me... assuming he can get somebody to hold down his seat at the bar while he's riding.

@PhotoJoe apparently doesn't ride any longer. Maybe he'll hold down both our seats

@PhotoJoe, posting this as a reminder.

If anyone likes to ride in 100 degree (and possibly hotter but it's a dry heat) weather , this is a wonderful upcoming century in La Quinta, CA.

So, doesn't the hilly meet up with the regular century at some point? Maybe the timing will work out that we regroup.

Glad to hear it. I'm not 100% sure on this ride yet, but if I can do it, hopefully we can ride together, or at least start together. I know BG is doing the 100, but she'll be with her team and I'm sure they're all in better shape than I am.

With the amount of riding I have NOT been doing lately, I see no problem holding down 2, maybe even three, seats at a time.

I'm a "probable" for the ride. Probably going to do the regular century, leaving early. I did 33 miles the other day and could have easily kept going. If absolutely necessary, I'll do the metric, but I think I'm good for the full 100, as long as I'm not too slow for everyone. The challenge is I have college tuition due at the end of the month and my oldest came home the other day with a seized AC compressor on her car. Gonna cost me around $750 to fix. Just have to work everything out, but am hoping to make the ride.

I hate medical bills. They screw everything up!

Not sure which one I will do. Depends on how much riding I can do between now and ride day.

My riding partner, El Pistolero, won't be doing any riding anytime soon so I need to find someone new.

I am so glad that all four of my kids are already out of college. But I still get the calls, "Dad I am planning to do XY or Z and I need $$$..." Will it ever end?

Yeah, about that... the hilly century is about 107, so I'm calling it "dippin my toes in". 8k feet I think? Hard enough for one day, that's my opinion.

They share the same route after the first rest stop at rincon park so I'm sure we could orchestrate a meet up at the lunch stop (or the start, or both), which is probably 50 miles in or so for the century crowd. I'll do some fancy math later and see if I can figure out when the train from chicago traveling west at 17 mph will meet the train from San Francisco traveling east at 12 mph.

Lol my train starts out at 8 mph and then after an hour or so warms up to 10 mph.

I plan to say hi to you all at the start but I'm so slow I figure that will be the end of my socializing.

OK - century: 15 miles to rest stop 1, 30 miles to rest stop 2 and 50 miles to lunch. 70 is rest stop 4 and 81 is the popsicle stop. Total distance is 96 miles, so you need to do laps of the parking lot when you get back.

Hilly century uses the same rest stops with some early climbing to make it longer, so it's 25 miles to rest stop 1, 41 to rest stop 2 and 61 to lunch. It's the same identical route from that first rest stop on.

I'm planning on the Hilly Century.

Looking forward to seeing you all there - and meanwhile, let's meet up for a ride in the Malibu mountains. Maybe a CVC club ride?

All the best,

HD (Matt)

Hopefully we all get to hook up at the start line, but beyond that, I have no expectations of riding any real distance with you only for the fact that you would be bored to tears riding at my pace.

Alright! Two confirmed hilly nutcases.

I was trying to figure out how to make it for a CVC ride but it's too blasted far.
