Thank you gforeman for this wonderful design!!! My first attempt didn't result in a completely level stand, but it still works and will suffice for now. My only question is why haven't you turned this into a business yet? I bet you could sell those for $40-50 a pop and make a decent profit. I only spend $20 in materials myself and 45 minutes of my time.

You probably already have, but, I was thinking on the next one of using 1" instead of 3/4" for the bottom section. The uprights I think are fine at 3/4", they are just there more for balance than anything else, but I think the bottom could use a bit of re-inforcing. Do you know who made the first design? I gotta be honest, I could easily, and happily, crank out 5-8 of these on a Saturday and put an extra 50 bucks in my wallet. Not much I know but it does add up. But I don't want to step on anyone's toes and steal their IP.

My dad did something similar but with metal pipes back the 1970s for our family bikes. We had a shed full and it kept order and a place to lock them up.
Unfortunately, we only had thin locks and some cut mine and stole it.

The design has been floating around for quite a while. I'm happy with the 3/4. I filled the outriggers on the last one with tire weights, it's steady as a rock. I also use screws in all joints. Flexing over time will crack the glue joints. I also remove the screws, and take the upright off when I travel sometimes. Easier to toss in the car.

Made your stand Gary. Outstanding. It's a bit cockeyed, ~1/4 in, but works great and is very stable. Making another for bike #2 and will use a simple wooden jig to make sure the T's are perfectly orthogonal to the elbows. The only mod I used was to replace your hot glue with cyanoacrylic glue (instant setting) available at the hobby store. It permeated the sand a bit and formed a glass-like plug that also bonded to the PVC. I suspect it is deeper and stronger than hot glue so left off the screws. We'll see how durable it is.

I didn't glue in the uprights. I take this stand with me when I travel by car to events and use it to hold my bike instead of leaning it against the car or laying it on the ground while I get ready.

I've made sooooo many of these for friends.

I don't glue the uprights either, but I do have screws in them.

A simple speed square will get your uprights level. No need to bother with a jig unless you building many more.

Great stand and love the graphics. Mine are very plain in comparison.

I built a couple of PVC bike racks lately out of 3/4 inch pipe when I remodeled the garage. The green one in the picture holds five bikes up against the garage wall and the slots are wide enough to handle either road or mtn bike wheels.

Built a second small portable one as a single rack to hold bike at races. Much better than leaning the bike up against the car or tree while I am getting my gear together.

It reminds me of some terrific, very helpful youtube videos which show how to build DIY bike stands. The process seems really straight forward and could save you a lot of money.

I am doing a deck under the house for our myriad bikes to store them away neatly, and this thread has re-emerged at just the right time, The thing I like about this design is that contrary to the commercial metal loops that we currently have, there is no way for the stand to interfere with the rear derailleur, which has been an on-going annoyance. Plus, the stands here can be tailored to each bike's tyre width and height (we have several Bike Fridays, for example).

What's the difference between that and buying one?

Work stands last for ever - buy a nice one and enjoy it for years. I have a "meh" work stand and it just won't die so I can buy a nice one.

Will this design work with MT. Bikes with Disc brakes? Need to build rack(s) for 4 mountain bikes with disc brakes.

Trying to decide between gforeman's design and 1242Vintage's design. Need to keep the kids and wife's bike on the ground so the can get at them easily. I have a elevated rack for my road bikes.
