  • People in Seattle don't jaywalk anywhere near as often as folks in New York City, NJ, or Philadelphia. The night before the ride started, I was walking around town. I'd be at a red traffic light; there would be no cars in sight; and no one would cross the street against the light. Similarly, it was rare indeed to see a rider on RAW roll through a stop sign. The "Idaho stop" has not made it to Seattle. (Yes, I know it's illegal. I'm still surprised more people don't do it.)
I used Bikeflights for the first time this past June to ship my bike to and from the Missoula REi. Had a great experience with them. Wildly overestimated the weight of the box, bike, racks, stive and empty fuel bottle at 90 lbs. Shipping was $73 each way, including a $5 charge for pick up at a LBS and REI. United wanted $175 each way. Even with paying the shops to pack and reassemble, I saved money over what United wanted just for the flight. And there was no need to arrange for special transportation form/to the Missoula airport. As you might imagine, there is not a fleet of minivan cabs lined up at such a small airport. In gact, it took me nearly 45 minutes to get a regular cab to the campground where I started the tour.

Heh. I noticed the same thing when I was in Seattle before the start of a tour. The other thing I noticed is that motorists actually yield to pedestrians trying to cross the street instead of trying to turn in front of them when the light turns green like many do in Philly. I remember walking around town with another tour participant. As soon as the light would turn green I would dart out into the crosswalk to establish my position, leaving my companion wondering.. After a few times of doing that I noticed that no one was trying to cut in front of me. Do you remember when Mayor Street got a jaywalking ticket in L.A. while he was out there for a conference? He tried to use his mayoral status to get a pass. Didn't work.
