I picked up my bike from the shop today, after it had been trued for the second time in the month I've had the bike.
The wheels spun nicely and the spokes sounded fairly even in their tune when plucked. The mechanic who worked on it (apparently) was the most experienced at wheel building in the shop. He said that it was the best it was going to get, but still highly recommended I look into new / stronger rims.
I spoke with the manager about the trouble I was having and he offered to either replace the wheels with a new set or give me credit towards an upgraded pair.
The ride home was quite enjoyable (other than the blazing hot weather) and smooth, although when braking, I could feel that the rear wheel wasn't perfectly true. When I got home, I double checked the wheel. It was still fairly true (not much worse than before), but a bunch of the spokes were loose.
I'm planning on taking the bike back tomorrow and taking the manager up on his offer to trade in the wheels for an upgrade
I also bought some spoke wrenches and have been reading up so I can maintain my own wheels when I get the replacements
