longest ride, first ride of September

Well last night I loaded the bike and had my wife drop me at the bus stop where we pick up our oldest son. I rode home for a total of 5.01 miles in 25 minutes. Looking forward to more rides this month.

Blessings on all of you, and thank you for all of the encouragement.

Hey, you're about .99 miles short of a nice even 6 miles, get back out there! Just kidding, hope it was a fun/stress-free ride. Next up: 10 miles, then 15, then 20, 25, 30, 35...you get the point.

Be sure that not all of that 5mi ride is fun. By that I mean make sure you push hard for a bit of it; sweat a bit, challenge yourself. If it's too easy..too fun for the entire ride you won't be making progress. I remember when 5mi was a goal and at that point any real "work" was decidedly unpleasant. My body simply wasn't used to exercise. So fight that unpleasantness a bit and be sure to do some work. With some regular 'pushing' and a bit of suffering you'll keep improving and improving. I don't drop by here quite as often as I used to because I have now lost about 90lb and knock off 50mi days whenever I want but part of me will always be a clyde and I want to be of some small encouragement. Keep it up.

What you did is a tremendous way to break through barriers! When I am going for a new distance or one that I just want to target I ride to the half way point therefore I have to ride back. Getting dropped off at a distance away is another fine method.

Did I hear you were into photography? You now have a 7 (or 10!) mile outing. Each two miles stop and get intense about something and take some photos. Get back on the bike and go two more miles. Or one mile. Before you know it you will be back to the starting point having done 10 miles. You will be exhausted but it will be great.

Very true Digibid. right now I try to keep a steady cadence until I am winded, coast some, try to sprint some, coast some, etc... I get my heart rate over 150 beats per and keep it there (closer to 170 beats). I try either to increase distance or increase speed so that I am always pushing myself.

Wondermonkey, what a great idea. I will have to try it when I pull the trailer with my mountain bike so that I can keep the camera with lens in the trailer until I pull it out to use (I am affraid to put $5000.00 worth of Carmera body and lens on my back when I ride). I can load the mountain bike and the burley trailer easily enough on the Tahoe.

On Sunday our church invited two other churches in the community to have worship at the marina park. I rode there and back 2.25 miles each way with an overpass with a pretty good grade that goes over the train tressle (I didn't stop on the way there, but wound myself out of breath on the way home and stopped for a breather.... something about riding on a full belly).

I like to ride to my kid's soccer games... usually it's a half hour drive and a 1 hour warmup, so I have a minimum of a 1.5 hour ride to use to get there, and a ride home if I need it. The longest ride I've done to get to soccer is 85 miles (I took the long way. The REALLY long way).

I really don't like "out and back" type rides, but a loop is fine and a destination is even better in my opinion.

    Keep working at it!

I like a change of scenery too TrojanHorse I went out last night and got 4.88 miles in and should have gone further, but I was able to keep pedalling for most of the ride and even tackle some small inclines and one long very gradual one.

I mapped out an eight mile loop with only a small section that I would have to ride on twice last night, so I will attempt that this weekend.

I also am using CatEyeatlas.com and strava.com to track total distance of rides, routes, heart rate, and speed. Come join me there if you would like

    Dave

Thank you all for the encouragement..... 7 miles today on the Raleigh Talus 29er (about twice or more the weight of the Raleigh road bike I have been riding).

CATEYE Atlas | 14 Sept Boardman, OR

Route, heart rate, and other information here. The Talus doesn't have the cadence meter; so I was only tracking heart rate, distance, and speed.
