Personally I run very warm. I ALWAYS ware a Pearl Izumi base layer, so I normally have two layers on the top. Even when it is 100 degrees out I have the base layer on, fore it does an amazing job keeping you cool when it is hot and warm when it is cool! I go to a thermal base layer when it drops below 60.

I was out today, it was 64 degrees and I was in my normal summer shorts, base layer top and a long sleeve jersey and was just fine. Yesterday I went out with the wife, it was about 50. I had on the tights over cycling shorts, thermal base layer, long sleeve jersey, and semi thermal outer layer. Again, I was just fine.

I have also cycled in the upper 50's with just shorts but keeping my core very warm and I am very, very happy, too.

I have worn shorts all year around and have go for hour+ walks when it is 20 degrees out in shorts. I have lots and lots of layers on the top with hat and gloves to keep my core warm, and my legs are just fine. I contribute this to the fact that I do run very hot, my legs are a GREAT radiator to help cool down the core if I am waring a bit too much on the core

W00t for base layers. I use Craft. Both winter and summer. It's amazing what a base layer with a windstopper front can do. I've used that plus a jersey in weather colder than I thought possible.

It's a quandary for me. Knee warmers don't seem to fit well, but they low bulk. Tights fit better but taking them off mid ride is not looking good. Again, CA is different..if I knew I wouldnt be taking them off is wear tights for sure.

So, as I have stated, I am one that is happy with just tights and no leg warmers. What I am finding is that when it is cold enough for tights, I want them for the whole ride. When it isn't that cold, I start in shorts with warm layers on top and I am fine. So, my question:

Those of you that do use leg warmers and take them off mid ride, how long do you ride and how often do you stop?

My normal ride is only 25~35 miles (1.5 to 2.5 hours) and will only have one stop for water, at most. For me that isn't really a long enough ride to justify changing clothing mid ride.

40 to 50, maybe 2 stops. It's a group thing.

ETA: I've had rides start at 50 degrees and be 75+ at the end. Morning clouds turning to sun later.

It's an AIDS/LifeCycle training group. This one happens to be run by a friend and coworker. It's geared towards newer riders, and so my partner will come along. We usually stop at a coffee shop, often a Starbucks. If things get long enough we do a lunch stop. I try to be near a Subway for that (chopped salad yay!) or I skip that.

Water/bathroom stops are fairly short. Lunch stops are longer. The group tends to get spread out on longer rides.
