Took yesterday off after 5 straight days of riding. The downside to the day off is that now my January goal will be more difficult to attain. Now with just 4 days left I still lack over 54km. That is over 13 a day. Doable but I would say not likely at this point. What I am considering is 10-11km rides the next three days and then two rides on the 31st to get it done with a day off on the 1st of Feb. We will see how I feel when I get there. The upside to the day off was that todays ride felt amazing. I have been hitting a wall and beginning to break cadence at around 5km. But today that wall did not come until about 8km. The only thing I can attribute that to is that I purposely took is slower in the first couple of kms and the day off yesterday. Either way if felt great and my immediate goal is to increase the distance at which I can maintain a good cadence so it looks like I may be getting stronger.

So here are the updated totals:


January Goal = 250km
MTD = 195.3km
To Goal = 54.7

Year Goal = 2500km
YTD = 195.3km
To Goal = 2304.7

As noted, the January goal is going to be tough but the yearly goal, which demands 208.3 per month is going to happen for sure with only 13 km to go. With that in mind I will likely try to hit the 13 mark tomorrow.

Absolutely beautiful weather, as it has been for the last week or so, about 65 and sunny. A bit of wind here and there but not too bad. Today I rode a route that gives me a very slight but steady incline. The first 7km are all slightly uphill with a steeper push the last km. I stopped and rested at the top of the hill for about 5 minutes then made my way down. I knew the uphill section but had never gone over the top to see the other side. Now that I have there is more to explore there. I like keeping my rides fresh by doing different routes and going new places. Part of the motivation of riding for me is going farther to see more things.

So here are the updated totals:


January Goal = 250km
MTD = 208.1km
To Goal = 41.9

Year Goal = 2500km
YTD = 208.1km
To Goal = 2291.9

Total needed to stay on track for the yearly goal is in hand (.2km short). Now the next three days I want to see if I can get to the 250. It will take work and I would love to check it off my list but I am not sure if I will be able to get it done or not.

12.3km today. I didn't want to ride, had to force myself to go and seriously considered not going. The first km or so was torture but then I settled in and felt really great. I had planned shorter ride than normal of about 9km but got to the finish point and felt so good I decided to keep going. Rode through a segment I ride occasionally at the very beginning of another route and ended up setting a PR on it 7 seconds.

I am growing more and more addicted to the bike.

So here are the updated totals:

January Goal = 250km
MTD = 220.4km
To Goal = 29.6

Year Goal = 2500km
YTD = 220.4km
To Goal = 2279.6


​With less than 30 to go now over the next 2 days I really believe I can hit the 250 mark. That would be a big win.

Not much to day about today's ride other than I decided to go back up the hill I did a couple of days ago. I am getting stronger mentally as I do not shy away from climbs like a did a month ago. I still do to some degree and climbs are intimidating but not nearly as much as they were just a few weeks ago.

So here are the updated totals:

This may sound weird after just commenting that I am getting mentally stronger, but todays ride was a mental struggle a bit and I am already psyching myself out about tomorrow. The big thing is the 250 goal. I am only 17.6 away but right now, that seems insurmountable. We will see what happens tomorrow.

So that's a wrap on January. I took the 31st off.

January 1 weight: 150.7kg
February 1 weight: 147.7kg
Monthly weight lost: 3kg

Total weight Loss: 22.3kg




Not bad. Tough first part of the month and didn't ride alot. But I rode more towards the end of the month and started to see better results. 3kg is better than nothing.

Total Distance: 232.4km

I did not hit the 250 stretch goal. But I exceeded the goal of 208.3 that keeps me on track for the yearly goal. Considering this was my first full month riding I am very happy with what I accomplished. I look forward to see what can be done next month.

February 1....

Weight is currently at 147.7kg.

Today I rode 10.5km. It was a frustrating ride. A dirt trail on the edge of the city I really enjoyed got paved over. And I couldn't ride it because they were still working on it. So I had to alter my route. Furthermore, halfway through the ride the weather turned. I had to ride home in a very stiff headwind and it rained the whole way. Miserable. But at least I get to say I am a badass due to rule number 9.

I need a new 208.3km to keep on track for the yearly goal of 2500km. And I am going to set a stretch goal again of 250km. I just missed it last month but the last couple of weeks have been very good. So I think I can get it done; and that with 3 less days to make it happen.

So here are the new totals:

Nice ride today. Took yesterday off due to the big Super Bowl party. We have it on Monday's because the game airs at about 5 am for us so we watch a replay and party all afternoon.

Today's ride was in traffic so a bit of stop and go at a few lights. Put in 20.4km which is my longest single, non-stop ride to date. Wasn't sure how long I would ride today but just went out for a while and then turned around and headed home. Reached home at 16km and decided to push it to 20 to set a nice milestone. First ride over 20.

Nothing special about today's ride really. After going 20km yesterday I decided I wanted to keep it shorter today as a bit of a recovery type ride. I went out and came home. Thought about pushing another 3 or 4 but decided to shut it down and sprinted the last 1km home. I did ride faster than I have been going as well with the highest average speed on a ride to date.

16.7km today....as usual for Kunming, perfect weather at mid 60's and not a cloud in the sky. I rode a new route today, as I often do but this one could turn into a regular for me. It was a nice run around the north side of town with just a taste of downtown.

February Goal= 250km

First week or so of Feb in the books and I am right on 10km per day average which means 250 is definitely in my sights. And that average is only with only 4 days riding so I am definitely doing well right now in terms of making the yearly goal and the monthly stretch goal.

Up and back type of ride around the neighborhood. I tried to push myself speed wise today and did at about the 7km mark to attempt a shot at a PR. Pulled 18.6kph overall which is not bad for me at this stage. I think this will be a regular route for me to push my speed on. I did get that PR doing the 1km segment in 2:15 at 25.9kph. That is over 2kph faster and a full 15 seconds faster than my previous best. Really happy about that. The total ride today was 10.5km.

12.8 today. I plan to ride a bit father tomorrow and then 20 on Thursday and take Friday off because Saturday will be a big day - close to 40km. Great temps today but heavy swirling winds - one minute was into the wind, the next with it. Overall it was a good ride and I pushed myself speedwise.

Real easy day. I rode to my LBS today because my new shoes came in and I had to get some pedals as well. So I rode there - had the pedals put on and rode home. It will take a bit of getting used to the shoes but I know it will be a great improvement. Total was 11km. In regards to my goals I am doing very well this month. Pretty much dead on if not a little ahead of where I need to be. Also, I am planning a big day Saturday so if I pull that off I will be in very good shape by the end of the week.

Rode 16.8km today. There was a snafu and strava didn't record the ride. No biggie - just a bit suckie. Anyway, I had a nice ride and will either take tomorrow off or only ride a short distance as Saturday I plan on going 16-17km ride out and then return a few hours later.

total of 37km on Valentine's Day. It was a really good day for me and a PR for most kms in a single day. I rode down to a friends house and then home later that night. That last 3 or 4 km were a struggle as I was really tired out. But still a good victory for me personally to put in that distance in one day.

Taking the day after this ride off to recoup and relax. That will leave me with 13 days left to ride only 85.6 to reach the stretch goal. Should be no problem. Also my next ride should get me past 400km for the year which will be a nice little milestone as well.

Late entry here as I had an impromptu trip out of town over Chinese New Year. But on the 17th I put in 10.5. That was my last ride so tomorrow will be my first go in a week. Ready to get back on there and ride. I really miss it. 5 days left to go 75km and reach the stretch goal of 250 for the month.

First ride in a few days and it felt really good. Meandered a bit but really it was more exploratory than anything which was fun. The best part was that I totally forgot that I had a segment on strava that I rode through. When I looked at the strava data I was very pleasantly surprised to see that I set a PR on that segment. This is really encouraging in that it means I am getting stronger and stronger. To set a PR without even thinking about the segment itself was awesome.

Climbed the big hill near my house today. This was the second time. It is a tough climb for me both mentally and physically. Last time I did it I rode a small loop that started with the climb and then looped back to my house for a total of about 10km. Today however, I started with the climb and then did a larger loop home so I tacked on an extra 5km post climb. That was a nice victory for me. It was very taxing. Post climb I had a hard time maintaining cadence....but I did make it.

February Goal= 250km

Year Goal = 2500km
YTD = 440.7km

Only 41 km to go to hit the stretch goal. With three days left in the month that averages out to just over 13 km per day. No problem. I may be going down to my friends house on saturday which is a 37+km round trip so I will have it right there no problem. I will have to wait and see but if I do that I will ride tomorrow and take friday off to rest up for saturday.

Put in 11km today. It was an errand run. I went to pick up some bike wash and make arrangements for repair on my motorcycle. Nothing special just nice and easy. Tomorrow will be and off day to rest up for the bigger ride on Saturday. I plan to match (and possibly beat) my one day PR for distance.

36.8km on the last day of February to close out the month. That means I hit my stretch goal of 250km. Regarding the ride itself it was basically 18km to my friends house. Hung out there for a few hours and then rode home at about midnight. Swirling winds on the ride there but no winds on the ride home. I did great going and felt really good going home until about 6km to go. I really started feeling it then and began slowing my pace down. But it was still a great ride today and a nice accomplishment to basically match my previous PR for 1 day distance.
