It's only about another mile, and flat or downhill. If you're at all worried about traffic, in my experience, the majority of traffic is on GMR, not GRR. GRR is a tighter road and the pavement is not as good. FAR less traffic on it. The last time I was there, the pavement wasn't bad enough to not enjoy the ride, however, between that and the tighter road, the canyon carvers just don't like it as much. Now, with that said, I have NEVER felt unsafe due to vehicular traffic on either of the roads. Now, the street-lugers scare me a bit!

If you're doing the Village, you have to be mentally prepared for the trip down. I get in the mindset that coming down the mountain is downhill. Seems logical, doesn't it? NOPE! There is one pretty good climb right out of the Village, then a several more rollers on GRR. They're not bad, but I seem to always be in the mindset that it's going to be a simple roll down the mountain, and then I get defeated mentally.\

Also, the rule for not getting lost (not that it's tough) but at any interchange, always go UP. It works going up and down the mountain. Always go UP.

Color me jealous. I can do it with my compact - 12/28, but would love another gear or two.

Count me as interested. I need some lead time to ask for day off if I'm still working at bike shop. I'm seeking "normal" work that leaves me free on weekends but nothing found yet.

Where is the shack in relation to the E Fork road intersection? Is that the big turnout where there are always a bunch of cars parked?

I've gone from the house to SF Dam and up 39 to the E fork and then up to GMR and back down GMR. Never seems to be any traffic auto or bike going in that direction once you turn off 39. Seems everyone is going the other way.

if you go East fork, pass the camp ground, right turn up lil GMR, hook a right at GRR. After that first lil bump climb, the shack is like 500yards into the decent, first harder right hand turn. Its a cinder block building w/ fencing. Hard to spot when decending and looking at the exit of the turns at 20-40mph

I'd actually appreciate it if you would lock it in your 21. Otherwise, you might as well bring that DSLR kit again and stop more for "pictures" (JSIGONE'S nice way of waiting for us slow-pokes).

Dang it sounds like fun. I'm down as a definite maybe. Just for fun I'll ride my fat tire bike if I go.

heres a link to the gmr thread from last year. Beachgrad organized the ride and lots of C&As showed up April 27 2014.
It was cold on the downhill part so bring a windbreak fro that. Also somewhere in the link is a google fly through of the route.

I would like, if nothing else to meet you personally. See if there is a date in February that works for you. My friend, Kathy and I, really want to try this ride at least starting out in a group...

My friend does her facebook posting... when I get home I can see as she waited for me here and there she posted 30 photos, a little story about the ride, what she made for dinner.... etc. I really hate her and her facebook!

Not that any ride should be planned around TrojanHorse or me, but the 28th is the Race on the Base, so we'll both probably be out for that date. Again, we'll all do GMR again sometime, so if that works best for you Pam, go for it! But we'll want to see pictures!!!

As long as I have something to look at I am good. Of course listen to me, never done GMR so I'm just hoping to make the Shack...

PJ: How far from the Shack do you meet up with GRR? I think once I get there, the views will keep me going... that and Coke and Shockblocks!
Thanks for the encouragement, but keep in mind it's not about age it's about physical ability and having logged just 40 rides EVER It would be tough trying to more than double my max previous climbing effort not to mention the distance alone is close to my max ever ridden. I'm lucky to get 1 ride a week in and even then it's no wear near the amount of climbing.

Don't get me wrong I love to push myself and have done in the past to the point where I almost passed out and actually puked during a climb. Other times I kept peddling until I just fell over in the middle of the street lol. However I just know this is way beyond my effort. If anything I can try and do the 2000' halfway mark and call it a day.

I am riding with Kathy Thursday night and will mull over dates... we may have to pick something and what works for us and if any one of you can join, that would be great. Will be in touch...

And LGHT... I don't take climbing GMR Lightly... I've written in the area enough and driven the course to know its tough... like an ultimate climb, so don't do it before you are ready and willing...

I think in March you mean an equinox ride - I'm interested, have driven GMR, but only heard about riding it.
