Good news, the fork on my road bike is OK and I should have it back next week. I sortof liked the idea of climbing on the mountain bike though...

QUESTION: Kathy thought we were doing a loop and I explained its out and back. Obviously it can be done as a Loop, going down Mt. Baldy Rd from the Village. What are the stats on that? What is the route though town to get back to the cars? Is there a better/different place to start if that's the option?

Ignore the part that goes up to the lifts so subtract 10 miles and 2000 feet. The high school or Boulder Springs is fine.

Alternately, you can just do an out and back:

Dangit, I go away for two days and the ride is all shot to heck.

!!

As it turns out my daughter's soccer coach scheduled a last minute scrimmage Sunday morning and my son already has games, so I can't expect my wife to be in two places at once. That guy is really getting on my nerves with all the last second scrimmages on Fridays and weekends.

I chiseled March 8 in stone. Depending on the crowd I'll either do the ride from Whittier to the village thing or we can do a boulder springs to the lifts thing. Or something.

I got some defeet warm gloves and some wool socks in the mail from Amazon while I was gone too.

I'm planning on the 8th. Right now the forecast for the village that day is beautiful. Clear with a low of 47 and high of 66.

Oh hallelujah - I planted the seed in my son's fertile mind that he could do the shack. It will require a confluence of events - the Cal Cup soccer tournament starts tomorrow for his age group and his team's pretty good, so they MAY still be playing next weekend. My daughter's team starts on March 7, so if TrojanKid is also still playing, I'll be driving one of them to Timbuktu for a game and not going anywhere near GMR.

I'm really hoping he says let's do it thought. That scrawny bugger is fit as heck, so his W may be low but his Kg are super low.

I can see the GRR ridge from my house and even though it hasn't rained today in the valley, the base of the broken cumulus and the buildup against the San Gabriels has been just about road level all day..

BKN019-050 at Bracket field all day.

Scattered light rain on the radar over the San Gabriels.

Is the start time on the 8th remaining the same? Daylight savings time starts that Sunday.

How does everyone feel about starting at 9?

I'm flexible either way, it's always tough losing an hour that first day of DST. Forecast is for warm weather next weekend so getting up the hill while it is early and still cool will be good. Maybe split the difference and be ready to roll at 0830?

8:30 sounds like a good time... it should still be plenty cool next weekend for cycling. (I rode up GMR last July and I think it hit 115. Not cool.)

#1 son's soccer team advanced, so the quarter final game is Saturday at 8 am in Highland (aka Egypt) and then semis are at noon. Odds are pretty strong they won't advance past Saturday so I am working hard on convincing my riding buddy that GMR is more fun than going to his sister's games on Sunday.

I'm in again. Just wanted to mention the time will be changing that night so maybe we could do a 9:00am start time which would be 8:00am prior to the time change. As it is with the newborn at home I'm only getting around 6 hours of sleep would hate to lose that extra well needed hour...

I have to agree with @LGHT on the 9 AM start time but as of now I'm in regardless of the start time.

I will go with what the majority wants. 9:00 works but a compromise of 8:30 is more preferable since I'm a SLOW climber

I have a new Ultegra 12-30 cassette and new chain waiting to go on the bike. This makes me feel better about myself.

I'm also running a 12-30 cassette. I get a lot more use out of the 30 than I ever got out of the 11 on my old 11-28.

I have 11-28 now and would love to switchover to 12-30 for hills also. Is switching out a cassette something you can do at home? I have a spin doctor toolkit with all the tools and a chain whip and the youtube videos make it seem easy enough, but not sure if I would need to purchase spacers or if I would need to re-adjust my derailleur afterward or not.

I swapped out my 11-25 that came stock on the bike to the 12-28. I tried to dial in the gears but it was never quite perfect, so I had the shop do a fine-tuning. This will be the first time I've swapped a chain, but don't expect any problems doing that.

Yes you can do it at home if you have the tool to loosen the retaining ring and a chain whip. You're running a 10 speed cassette, right? Your freehub might have a spacer on it if it has the capacity for an 11 speed cassette. If so you would just leave that spacer on it. The other spacers between the cogs you keep the old ones where they are on the old cassette and put the new ones from the new cassette on in the same order as it comes out of the box.

You may need to screw in the derailleur's b screw a little due to the slighter larger 30 cog, need to keep the top pulley from contacting the cog. You also might have to give your derailleur's barrel adjuster a bit of a turn, likely no more than 1/4 turn in one direction or the other. Maybe a very slight adjustment on the limit screws, but probably not needed. If you've adjusted one before it's not a problem, if you never have it is a bit intimidating at first but not difficult. Basically just want to get the derailleur pulleys to line up directly under each cog so it runs quiet and shifts well (barrel adjuster) and make sure that the derailleur does not go too far in or out to cause the chain to overshoot the top or bottom cogs (limit screws).

Also need to make sure your chain is long enough to allow for the larger cog, it is only 2 more teeth and the chain goes round only 1/2 the cog so it probably is long enough already. Mine was when I made the change. Which was nice because I had a new chain with less than 300 miles on it when I got my new wheels and cassette.

Are you going to do one of the BCI rides on Saturday? I'll be there and we could be sure you've got it dialed in before heading up GMR.

The most time consuming part is getting the wheel off.

The locknuts are serrated and torqued to about 40 ft lb so a fairly long handled wrench to fit the spline tool is in order. They tend to come loose suddenly so make sure you have knuckle clearance between the chain whip and the wrench hand.

If you need any adjustment at all to the RD it should just be tweaking the barrel adjuster or stops a tiny bit.

Running a 12-32. Don't miss the 11 at all. My first ever trip up GMR last month I was on the 28 almost all the time. A 28 will get er' dun.

The back side, up from 39 and the E Fork has me on the 32 almost the entire time, but I'm old and fat.
