I'm at a horse show in SLO on Saturday. Should have sufficient energy reserves for GMR on Sunday, but...

I'm not 100% out yet. Tho leaning toward not riding in part because of no other women I feel I could ride with but also partly because my weekend is full thanks to Saturday all day working so may want Sunday off to chill

i've got two riding buddies lined up now. So we could be as many as 10 based on the list above. Did we settle on 0830 to start?

The postponement of the ride caused me to start thinking (usually not a great thing, I'll admit, but...)

It may be too far away, so perhaps another Clydesdale Assault on GMR (as multiple rides had been mentioned) is in order. In either case, may I suggest a date of Saturday, May 16? And this one is just a ride to the top of GMR.

Here's why.

My son and I did it last time they came through (2-3 years ago) and it was awesome. As the riders came down GRR some of them (and a follow car or two) almost went tumbling over the edge as they didn't know about the hairpin turn going down Little GMR (the backside of GMR). Then, after about an hour to 90-mins, they come riding up GMR like it's totally nothing. Even the Laughing Group was flying up the climb. Very fun day. And perhaps a non-cycling significant other could pack a car with picnic supplies and meet at the top.

At any rate, just an idea/suggestion.

That... is a GREAT idea! I put it on my calendar. I have to go to Phoenix the next day, no sense in holding back on Saturday.

We'll need jsigone (or you) to hook up a trailer with growlers and what not to get the full experience.

When you say the "top of GMR", are you saying the Y of GMR and GRR? When you did it, how crowded was it?

I have a friend who produces the television coverage of the race. He said we should ride up to the lifts. I said he's smoking his breakfast!

That's what I was thinking. I don't know how far along Ridge Route riders would be allowed to go. In fact, couple years ago, when we got to the GMR/GRR intersection (we had come up the front-side of GMR), they had the yellow gate down just before the intersection and would only let people through who were walking. So we had to dismount and walk wherever we wanted to go. My son and I walked up GRR 100--200 yards out of sight, then mounted our bikes again and rode a quarter to half mile up the road until GRR started descending. Then we watched a bit into the distance.

When we went, there were hundreds at the 'Y', if not more. Many had driven up and sort of "camped" at their car on the flat section of GMR just above the shack. They'd go back to their car, have a BBQ and some beverages. Big party. We were up there for a good 3 hours, maybe more. But we were always running into people we knew and having a good time. Packing some sandals for next time, though, might be a good idea.

I've never been to the Lifts. Done GMR/GRR a half-dozen times, but always by the time I get to Baldy Village, I'm whooped and have no desire for more pain.

Finally, someone talking some sense!!!!!

My suggestion, so that this doesn't get lost, is to post its own thread. The SoCal C/A's have the ride this Sunday, then the Marathon Crash race and the Pizza Port 70 coming up. If you start a thread, it'll stand on its own and not get lost in the shuffle. BTW., I have this on my calendar, too! Sounds like fun.

This Sunday with the good weather and the snow the flats and ski lift area will be wall to wall with snow players, stuck cars, etc.

I wouldn't go past the Village even if I did have the gas for it this weekend.

So is it GMR->GRR->Village (eat at the lodge?)->GRR->GMR?

Or GMR->GRR->Village->Baldy Road->Baseline/Route 66/etc>

I am planning to return via GRR and GMR. Yes I understand there is a climb out of the village, but from what I have read GRR/GMR is more scenic, less traffic and less falling rocks than going Baldy Road.

Sunny Weekend, first real snow on the mountain, Baldy Road in the afternoon will be flooded with the drunk, tired and in a hurry.

I'm going back GRR

So nobody has to scroll back several pages, exactly where are we meeting at?

Meet at Boulder Springs Rd at 8, pedaling at 8:30 am on Sunday.

I personally prefer the GMR-GRR-Village-GRR-GMR approach but if we're really feeling froggy we could do GMR-GRR-VIllage-GRR-East Fork-39-Sierra Madre.

Really? Nobody wants to take a whack at the lifts? I'm looking for a chain long enough to fit over my 32 tooth cog. I have a new chain floating around the house but I can't find it. Eh, who am I kidding.

If my son comes with me, we're very likely to go slower than everybody else and turn around at the shed.

Sounds like my perfect riding partner...however, in reality, I suspect he'll be more like ahultin jr., just cruising along.

Yeah, but Sebastian is damn manly on the bike. Robert isn't there yet on a bike but he's a damn good swimmer and runner. Frankly, I don't know where he gets it.

I'm in for sure but I rode a century today with 6,400 feet of climbing so I'll be taking it easy. Hope to see everyone at 8:30 PDT.
