paddywagon exp 19 looks to me like it would meet your needs very well. Look for user reviews at amazon or something, check if there are bunches of previous purchasers with common complaints, if not I bet you'll be satisfied for at least 2 years.

Can't be helped, Dj, Pannier lovers REALLY love panniers.

If you want a lot more pannier suggestions, start another thread just like this one but ask for the best backpack instead of trunk bag!

Here's my trunk bag review, but it's TOO SMALL for a 13" MacBook. Might be able to strap MacBook in separate case on top of bag, however.

I scored my Jandd trunk bag, Rear Rack Pack II for $20 a couple of years ago on a Black Friday sale at Exhale Bikes in Phoenix. It's a vast improvement over the 90s vintage Specialized I'd worn out. Much stronger webbing/Velcro. Stiffer sides, which have a very firm foam in them. The foam should act as insulation and the main compartment's 6 walls all have 1/2" foam in them.

It has plastic hooks for shoulder strap attachment, straps are sold separately for $7-20.

I guess mine is an older model, as it doesn't have the cargo net shown on site.

lol . yeah they have Pannier tunnel vision ... lol... thats a nice looking bag and looks large enough to carry alot. but out of my budget (budget = what i want to spend, not what i can afford to spend) $84 plus $13 shipping. is that site in canada ? ... ill stick with amazon and ebay . but if i found that bag for $20 somewhere id buy it in a heartbeat and wouldnt mind buying a strap seperate as long as it has loops to attach ... i think im just gonna go with the axiom bag

I use a Topeak MTXP rack trunk on my commuter with flip out panniers in the side pockets. It's more than you want to spend and probably won't comfortably haul a laptop but it works great for impromptu grocery or takeout runs and does a great job of carrying tools and rain gear.
For computer specific hauling Topeak used to make a briefcase that would slide into an MTX rack.

Axiom seems to be a well-liked brand. This bag may work just fine for you. Other good names are Topeak and Avenir. I have an Avenir wedge saddle bag for my tools, and I'm very satisfied with it.

I used to have a J and D (aka Jandd) trunk bag and their expedition rack on my Bianchi hybrid. Great bag. Held a lot and it and the rack fit like a glove.

I made these "baby panniers/trunk bags" a few years back:

just pulled the trigger on the axiom. should come by tuesday/ wednesday . ill post up pics and my initial thoughts on it. but from the description and reviews from amazon it seems to fit all my criteria . the fold out panniers may just be big enough to carry the macbook . we will see. if not its not a deal breaker... if so ill be very happy for a while with this bag....... im surprised no one has recommended this bag or has posted about it on their own threads. seems like too good of a bag for a good price for more people not to own/ post about it... we will see

if anyone else interested :

A lot of us have used a similar bag from Nashbar that doesn't have the drop down panniers. It's not big enough to fit the tablet, but fits the rest of your criteria. I liked mine so much I bought a second one after the first one wore out after 5 years of use and abuse.
I'll second the comment about Axiom making good gear, I've been very pleased with their stuff that I've used.

This is what I would recommend for a trunk bag, given the parameters you are seeking. It is insulated, taller than most trunk bags and would likely have room for your laptop computer. It is also quality-made and worth the extra cost over less expensive models. I almost bought one but decided that I didn't need a bag that large, so I got a Louis Garneau racktop bag instead.

the nashbar bag is around the same price, isn't insulated and does not have a shoulder strap. the non shoulder strap is a big deal breaker .. Axiom seems to be a better bag. i will post up when i receive it

You do make this difficult on yourself and us. things that look good beyond their function cost more. thats how life is. if i took the time to design something that both looks good and works as well as the other thing, I would charge more for it, because there is added value. Good looks cost money. Thats that. It doesn't matter if you think a bag should cost 60 bucks or less, you are asking for something that is more than 60 bucks in the real world. That being said, it seems folks are trying to give you answers, so sit back, read, and listen. or if you already know what you want, get it. Alternatively, Maybe you can learn to sew?

How am i making it difficult by knowing exactly what i want ? i am not one of those people who wants what they want and wont accept if its not possible... i personally despise those kind of people .... what i want is possible, how do i know? cause i just ordered the bag that meets all my needs not even an hour ago....... i asked fr bags people tried to persuade me into panniers , i stated more than once my reasons for not wanting panniers.... life may be that way for you, and sometimes for me too... but it doesn't always have to be that way. you seem to have a defeatist mindset . im more of an opportunist (Edit 5/2/15 - 1:42pm: this should of said Optimist Not opportunist. i wont delete the original text tho. just add this note) , but still a realist . if what i want for what i want it for doesn't exist i will accept it. BUT IT DOES AND I BOUGHT IT... GET IT? so again what's difficult ? all i get from this is other people have paid way more for other bags that serve the same as what i bought or less , and want me to do the same , or do what they want cause they like people to do as they do or say .... its making me not want to ask anymore questions on this forum, which defeats 1 of the purposes of a forum .....

Thanks again to all those who gave actual help and advice. AGAIN I ORDERED THE AXIOM BAG and will post a review when i receive it. it may be a good choice for others looking for a feature packed inexpensive bag also .

hey man, no hard feeling, glad you got what you wanted. Hope it gives you years of service and looks cool enough for ya. I just thought it was funny that you come onto a public forum asking for advice, and then get angry with some of the folks who actually bother to take the time out of their day to think about your situation. they were just trying to help, I know I know, not the exact specific to the mm help you had asked for, but free advice given none the less. If you bring attitude to the situation, you may expect a few frank responses.

I'm actually interested to find out how you like the bag, so i hope ya do post a report.

I see. The older ones that I have are both insulated, have removable shoulder straps and went on sale for $29.99 from time to time. While the description of the new and improved model fails to mention what they use in the sides and bottom to create the shape I would imagine it would also insulate too.

No Hard feelings on my part either. i appreciate those who went out their way to post and respond to my thread, but incorrect help is no help at all, its not attitude its frustration . every forum im on for different things people are the same way . its like if you ask people "hey whats a good brand of water to drink" and you get nothing but responses of peoples favorite flavors of pepsi and coke , and a few who act as if anything other than coffee is blasphemy .. yeah its all liquids, yeah you can drink them all , but its not what was asked about .... get it ?

the newer ones arent insulated and dont have shoulder straps. i confirmed this with 2 different reps at nashbar . stupid of them to change the design ... to me a shoulder strap on any bag other than a back pack or large luggage is pretty much standard ... not being insulated isnt a dealbreaker. you can always put a smaller insulated cooler bag inside it, but no shoulder strap on a large bag , come on

ahh, i see you ordered an Axiom, I just noticed a Jandd on my local CL for $30. I bet it would hold a 13" MB while expanded, but then it's not completely insulated. Looks like the same story on the Axiom, though. The Axiom should be pretty good, as I've heard good things.

That's silly they removed some benefits and makes me glad I bought the second one when I did. I've packed lunch in mine for some rides through the forest preserve and like the insulation as have others. I bet you'll like the Axiom, let us know how you like it after you've had it a while.

Good luck with the Axioms if you ever need a warranty! Cause the best I can tell unless you bought them from a LBS there is not a warranty. Should I dare say I have a year old set of Axiom Grand Touring Panniers and the one that is most often is now torn in away that it is really not fixable.

DAKINE goggle cases
brackets (mounted inside) I had
Jandd pannier hardware
Nashbar front rack

Bags never moved while riding on roads or on some mixed terrain/technical dirt trails. I ended up selling it on CL. Never seen anyone do it. Thought I'd try it.

Notice the rack barely cleared the 29 inch wheels. But it was completely leveled. I hate seeing racks all crooked/tilted.

Axiom Paddy Wagon EXP 19

Ordered The Bag Friday . It came Monday . .. Used it yesterday on my day off running errands stuffed with an umbrella , jacket, water, juice, u lock, cable, various chargers for electronics, small tool set , spare tubes, and a few small items i picked up along the way , also later some take out food that stayed hot all the way Home . I have to say its smaller looking than i thought and definitely wont hold the macbook . but ill find another solution for that ( yeah i may just get a pannier after all ... be quiet no i told you so's. lol ....... thats maybe ... maybe ...) .. Heres a Few pics of the bag on my bike . other than it being smaller im satisfied . its well constructed , insulated . water resistant and has a rain cover .... was easy taking it on and off the bike all day yesterday going in and out of stores .
