Wow impressive numbers! Only 3 years off and on but with this better bike already have 580 miles in 3 months compared to 800+ over 9 months with the old 10 speed. And no knee pain! Don't see any reason to stop and this point. Feel and look great. What haunts me is all of the years I could of commuted by bike! There's only 2 years I couldn't of out of the 17 years on my own. Alot of wasted money.. my retirement would be fully funded by now.

Started commuting in 2007, but have taken what seems to me a year off here and there in between. By that I mean that some years I commute 4-5 times a week; others, it's hard to get in more than 2 or 3 a week. Depends on work schedule and my commitment. THis year I am into it and plan to knock off a personal record number of miles and days commuting.

Bought a Schwinn Continental with a tax refund check in 1973 and started riding to work. Have bike commuted off and on every year since. Including 8 years in Atlanta when I rode to work almost every day.

I think I first tried riding to work in 2008, shortly after my roommates and I all decided to buy cheap MTBs from Target. I liked it, but didn't start commuting regularly until 2011, when I joined BikeForums and became properly obsessed with bikes and biking.

I've done it occasionally for many years, but I've been doing it every day for about three years.

I started commuting to school around the time Reagan came into office. I took a break from riding when I got my license and my first car, but got back into cycling again in my university days. Once I started working, I didn't have much time to ride, but then I came across a deal on a Pinarello that I couldn't miss out on, and got back into cycling again. This time I took it further than commuting, and began doing group rides, and then races.

I started out as a cycle tourist in 1972; had a short, occasional 2 mile commute from 1977 to 1982; then a fairly regular commute of about 14 miles since 1982. I became particularly serious about it since 2006, when I started using the commute for century training and would expand the miles.
In particular since I joined BikeForums in 2008,

Wow, some of you guys have some impressive streaks going. I've been commuting to work for the past 8 years and will top 32,000 miles on my afternoon commute today. I also commuted in college, which would add about 6 more years if I count back that far, but unfortunately there was about a 30-year gap in there.

Growing up in a small western ND town, the only hockey I saw was during the Olympics. I didn't understand it then and still don't. :-) But, any day the Bison beat the Gophers in football, or UND beats them in hockey, is a good day. ;-)
I forgot about five years of biking and paper route as a kid. I later found out that my brother and I were the last ones to bike. Kids got shuttled around by their parents after that. A fattie would have been great fun and kept us biking all winter, instead of having to hoof it those months. We'd have killed for mountain bikes too, but sure pushed our road bikes a lot more than anyone would consider doing these days. :-)

I commuted to friend's houses, the store for candy, and the local pool as a kid. I never rode to school, but did buy a bike in college so I could get around campus more quickly. My first job after college was about 40 miles away and I only drove then.
Then I moved to the Colorado mountains with long snowy winters, but commuted occasionally from 1 to 6 miles for about 12 years. I did a lot of mountain and road biking though while living there.
Then I moved to Kentucky and worked at home for 2 years. No commuting, but I would go out for a lunch ride a few days a week and usually did a Saturday group ride.
Moved again to NC in 2008 and I've been commuting regularly here for the past 7 years. One way distance went from 2 miles to 6 miles and now 12 miles. We went to a one car family about 2 years ago, so I ride more often due to that.

First "commute" was 30 years ago - to a Saturday job in an abattoir while at school. Apart from a short break for university (when distances were so short no bike was needed), I've commuted by bike ever since. Longest regular daily ride was 15 miles e/w. Shortest was 3.5 miles. Current commute is 7.5 miles.
In this time I've also raised children with whom I sometimes did the school run in a trailer and occasionally on their own bikes.
I'm not quite into the retirement age yet - but when I do, I wonder how I'll manage without the discipline of a daily 0600 hack through all weathers. Maybe I'll end up doing it for "fun".

Off and on since late 1970's. In my working life, I'd estimate that driving amounted to less than 10% of my commuting miles.

Hmm. Started maybe five years ago? Had some downtime in the middle due to fracturing my right knee on two separate occasions.
For awhile I lived about ~13 miles away from work, where I would have to jump on the shoulder of a highway for about 1.5 miles in order to get there. I just got into bikes then and I commuted a couple times, but it was a bit much for me, if there was another route I probably would have done it more. Then, I moved into town about four miles from work, I still mostly drove until my water pump blew out one morning and I started riding. After I saw how easy it was and how much better I felt, it became a regular thing, even after fixing the car. Did two years straight of pure bicycle commuting, ditching the car. Since then I've done a couple more years of mixed commuting, sometimes heavily bike, sometimes heavily car, probably amounting to 50/50 in the long run.
This year, after finishing up my physical therapy, I've been nearly 100% bicycle commuting. A few days being sick and rainy weather left me driving. But I've only used about five gallons of gas so far in 2015.

In the sense of riding a bike for transportation most times, around 45 years. Commuting to work, about 30 years (not every day, but 90% of the time).

A little under a year and a half. Forty mile round trip every day for most of that time, I wish I had thought about bike commuting sooner. Now my commute is ninety miles round trip, and can't see myself biking it which is unfortunate but I make up for it with regular 20 mile [round trip] "errands" by bike.

I started in 2008. Gas prices had already been bothering me for a while in the back of my mind, and just around that time my office moved to a new building with very limited parking. In the new building only management was guaranteed parking. They encouraged carpooling for the rest of us, but I shook my head at that suggestion and bought a bike.

Year round, although not necessarily every day, since 1998.
