Finally got my Ritchey endorsed front end upgraded. Those that say that fork upgrades "awaken" the specialized Allez Epic are right. Unbelievable change in performance. It is encouraging me to upgrade the drivetrain and wheelset it was that impressive.
To keep the "classic" look I'll be snagging an Ulegra 6600 crankset and may get an Ultegra cluster too. The rear cluster will have some hillclimbing gears up top since I live in a very hilly area. But ill try to keep some straight pulling gears down low for pulling thru straights or to maintain high speeds.
Wheelset. Because I do use this for commuting and my exercise rig. Makes sense to go with Mavic Open Pros for the median of performance and durability. Otherwise I wouldn't mind investing in some weightweenie sets such as the entry level Hed wheels.
So thumbs down or thumbs up?

But I don't think anyone would dispute that your bike is a road bike: road geometry frame, narrow slick tires, and drop bars below the saddle - sure looks like a road bike to me. Also looks like a very fun ride.

A purist might suggest that a cafe racer is a motorcycle and also that it's nothing to aspire to, mainly being a bike with all extraneous parts taken off because they got scraped up or broken in drunken wrecks.

Mostly ride your fancy race bike to a cafe with outside tables , and sit there with a coffee in your Lycra outfit..

British motorbike the cafe racer was doing a Time trial between a Cafe in one town, over those narrow secondary roads ,
to another Cafe in another town, and competing with their mates, for least time elapsed.
IOM TT is a Time Trial around that Island, but for those races the roads are closed to other traffic.

I understand what a cafe racer is. Originally cheap bikes stripped down and tuned, probably small engines with quick and easy revs that accelerated around corners and tight roads real fast. Most likely had bad top speeds and mediocre straight line acceleration. But due to high revs and gear ratios and weight balance could drive hard on corners.

What year is that?
What fork did you put on it?
You didn't like the Quill stem? I think it is better looking than its replacement (and I like how they are so easy to adjust for height.
I have a '94 Chromo version of that bike, makes a great commuter bike!
