I have worn out a lot of cotton / khaki shorts riding... I prefer 10 oz cotton duck or my mtb shorts with a fairly bulletproof synthetic material as these hold up much better.

One can always change at work and if sweat is an issue some base layer shorts you can wear under regular clothes work really well.

If I am not wearing base shorts I wear athletic boxers as they stay in place... no briefs or regular boxers for me.

Khakis? not for me.. Black .. Russell track suit trousers the knit gives with the cycle leg motion.
I rarely ride in any pants other than cycling specific ones, but when I do ride in khakis or such, I also cover my saddle. I work in a hospital, and can pick up some disposable, but durable paper shoe covers used in the Operating Room (though I pass through the OR, I’m not at the table during the surgery). They are essentially frictionless on the saddle, whereas I think plastic would be sticky on leather.

It was a treat today not dressing and undressing so many times.
I use a neoprene cover over my Brooks.

Often, wool trousers work well for me, because they seem to breathe better than cotton when I exert myself. I can get them fairly inexpensively at Costco, made in Italy. But as Rudi says, using them on a bike shortens their lives.

I do most of my riding in polycotton hiking pants. I have found some cheap own-label ones which have some cargo capacity but aren't as baggy and pocket-riddled as std cargo pants.
Polycotton is thin, durable, windproof and quick-drying and works from cool summer days all through winter.
If you ride fast and sweat buckets, it is not a good idea to ride in your work clothes.

I have come to my senses. I'm sticking to cycling shorts and changing at work. It is cooler, more comfortable and my wife approves. Thanks all.

We don't have a Target here anymore, but I'll have to check out some of our sporting stores.

Received my Horizon Guide pants from Eddie, same great fit and stretchy fabric, little bit of a flair at the bottom and a small zippered pocket on the side. Back pockets are zippered. Waist does not stretch. Got em in the Khaki, another great pair I'll be commuting in.

I don't usually read about someone going away from wearing cycling clothes...personally, I would hate wearing all day the stuff I wore while riding. But, I sweat a lot.

If you wear khakis, how do you keep from getting chai n grease on the leg?

I've been riding in shorts all summer and changing into khakis at work. But now that it's going to get cooler, I plan to ride in wearing my less-nice khakis. The ones that are still acceptable for work but are nearing the end of being acceptable. Maybe they have a little stain somewhere or the leg cuffs are starting to fray or they're fading from too many wash cycles. These are the pants that will end their useful life on my bike.

Yuck, I hate riding in long pants unless they're tights with shorts over them. I tried riding in jeans a couple times, and even in cooler weather they just feel yucky.

Sometimes I just use gym shorts and lycra boxer briefs (Starter brand from Walmart, the longer inseam version). They work pretty well at not chafing.

If I had to commute in my work clothes, I'd be in a car. I ride an hour each way at 18 to 20 mph average speed, partly to get a workout, and that causes me to sweat even on the coldest days. If my commute was a couple miles, anything would work. For a longer commute, in an office environment, I have always been able to find somewhere to clean up and change even if it takes a bit of creativity.

That's funny, I actually enjoy wearing jeans in cool weather. I prefer the feeling of cotton over synthetics when sweat isn't an issue, although I do wear cycling shorts as underwear when wearing jeans or wool pants if going more than 10 miles.
I also commute in my work shorts or pants year round, but at only a little over 8 miles I find commando works best.

Tried tights once, just once, didn't like them at all.

I rode to my parents house one day last winter, which is about 4 miles each way. It was probably in the 40's, but with jeans my crotch was sweating buckets and it generally just felt gross the whole time. I don't remember which bike I was on, though.

We're all different I guess, I can't wear bike shorts in warm weather because they cause me to sweat too much.

I usually wear shorts, but when work demands something dressier, I go for my Royal Robbins Traveler Stretch Pants , which are more than khaki-like enough to pass muster, and have never had an adverse interaction with my B67.

That's because Brooks saddles rule...
